Preparations for Liverpool’s biggest match of the season, against Inter Milan at the San Siro this evening, were overshadowed last night by the latest twists in the Anfield takeover soap opera, with Tom Hicks angrily terminating his negotiations with Dubai International Capital (DIC).
Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, said that he and his players would think only about booking their place in the Champions League quarter-finals, with his team 2-0 up from the first leg. But the latest development in the takeover saga has shocked the club’s hierarchy, with Hicks, the co-chairman, deciding to veto the decision by George Gillett Jr, his co-owner, to sell the vast majority of his 50 per cent stake in the club to DIC, the private-equity investment arm of the Dubai Government.
DIC remains hopeful of buying Gillett’s share and ousting Hicks in the long term, but the tone of Hicks’s statement suggested there would be no more amicable discussions after negotiations in Dubai broke down.
“I have decided to terminate any further discussions with DIC regarding their possible purchase of a minority stake in Kop Holdings and in turn the club,” Hicks said. “DIC made it clear that if they invested in the club, they would want it managed by committee.
“Based on my 13 years of successful experience as an owner of professional sports teams — and based in particular on the situation at Liverpool over the past year — it is clear that such a committee approach would not be in the best interests of Kop, the club or the club’s loyal and passionate supporters. Accordingly, I have decided to exercise my right . . . to veto any sale of any portion of Kop and the club to DIC.
“I and my colleagues and representatives will continue to explore a number of other options with regard to the ownership of Kop and the club.”
DIC has privately questioned the legitimacy of the Texan’s power of veto, but sources close to Hicks said last night that “the veto is watertight. It was in the shareholder agreement and, as far as Tom is concerned, that is the end of the matter with DIC.”
Benítez, whose employment prospects at Anfield remain unclear, said that the news would not distract his players from the task in hand against Inter, but his preparations have been disrupted by a disagreement with Xabi Alonso, the midfield player, who stayed in Merseyside yesterday to be with his girlfriend, Nagore, who is about to give birth to their first child.
Alonso had hoped to fly out this morning if the baby was born in time, but Benítez said no, putting further pressure on their working relationship, which has become strained over the past two months.

Hick's position in this is baffling... and his ego could well be lining him up for a very big fall !...
To discard DIC (or at least posture to do so with "bravado") in this manner smacks of a total lack of realism - the idea that anyone as strong financially as DIC are going to come in and NOT have a say in the way the club is run is truly "dreamland" !
Hicks is also now under considerable pressure - for it is one thing to turn DIC away, but can he afford in the eyes of the banking community who have lent him all the money to do this and then strike a deal a weaker silent partner ? I very much doubt it .....the financial community will not be impressed, and in Hick's eyes they are ultimately the only ones who matter.... this is a shrewd operator with a long term and very diverse business reputation and credibility to defend !
Hicks will definitely not relish the idea that he could be viewed as incompetent as Moores & Parry are over the first sale !
This is far from over !
Jones, London,
With United, Chelsea and Arsenal fluffing it over the weekend, surely we won't see a fourth upset in as many days.
All we want is 1 early goal and as Rafa said on teh redio this morning, the game will be over.
Greg, Istanbul,
Good luck tonight, Liverpool!!!!

Yeah right Phil (London) cos everyone admires the rate at which Spanish clubs get through their managers!
Jamie, Worthing, UK
Hicks has scuppered the Dubai negotiations in order to have his revenge upon Benitez by sacking him at the end of the season. THEN he will quickly conclude the sale.
Despite the usual statements that "business is unemotional etc ", such tycoons tend to have very large egos, and are renowned for never letting an employee get away with disrespect ("...As always, I am focussed on training and coaching the team...")
Hicks, being American and a Texan, has probably got a monstrous ego. That's how he got to be successful. He is going to squash Benitez like a bug. Mark my words.
And, yes, it will be a shame. Any man that brings Torres into the English game deserves better.
A.Kirk, Manchester, UK
Liverpool have to out to win! To play a defensive game could be disastrous, Liverpool have to show the world that they are a winning team. Having played the game, I never ever wanted to go for a draw â always went out to win. These guys are hungry and will score big-time tonight.
Colin Jackson, Halifax, Canada
A deafening silence from Moores and Parry again, when will we hear anything from the pair, understandably it is difficult for them in their position but the longer it goes on the more angry and frustrated the fans will become with them.
Gerard Savage, Faughart, Ireland
Picture Torres, Gerrard, Mascherano, Babel, Carragher, Reina eyeing the downfall of Inter Milan in the champions league, in exactly the sort of occasion these guys live to play football for and exactly the reason they play for Liverpool for. Does anyone REALLY believe they, at this moment, give a stuff about anything other than that ?
Torres will be excited at the thought of playing along side the world famous Gerrard on one of those great champions league occasions. No longer watching from Spain via his tv as Gerrard lights up the champions league with another moment of brilliance. This time he will be along side him, its everything he wanted. Does anyone really think his minds going to be distracted by the fat cats fighting over owning LFC ?
Look out Milan, the REDS are hungry, excited, confident and coming to do a job on you.
D McMahon, Liverpool, UK
Good thing to remember with the things v inter is materazzi is suspeneded and more importantly if torres, gerrard or even carragher scores a goal they need 4 to take it to extra time, so i reckon play 5 back with skrtel, carragher and hyypia playing as center backs with finnan or arbeloa or riise playing side back with gerrard staying behind torres and push for an early goal
Sean, Melbourne,
Isn't it about time all club teams adopted the Real Madrid/Barcelona model, where the guys at the top are elected by the fans every few years? It would certainly prevent this sort of situation, which boils down simply to a bunch of rich people squabbling over a plaything, which they see as nothing more than a way of making tonnes more money. And why exactly would the players be distracted? Are negotiations taking place in the centre-circle during matches? Unless the players are being threatened with non-payment of wages, they should only be concerned with playing football and stop using this non-story as an excuse for another mediocre league performance under Benitez.
Phil, London,
With Inter missing key defensive personnel, Liverpool could not have asked for a better opportunity of progressing to the quarters. You would fancy them to sneak 1 maybe even 2 with a patched up defence. Nothing but a win will suffice. Go the Reds.
Yusuf Jenkins, Brisbane Q,
I hope this latest development doesn't affect the players. I have a strong gut feeling that we are going to beat Inter in their own backyard. Torres and Gerrard are a formidable pairing at the moment, and Mascherano is available too.
Come on boys. Forget the off field dramas and do the job.
