Liverpool will ask the FA not to make an example of Javier Mascherano, claiming that the reaction to his red card against Manchester United on Sunday has been excessive.
The Merseyside club firmly expect the Argentina midfield player to be charged with misconduct and suspended for at least another two games, in addition to his automatic one-match ban, which rules him out of the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday. But they are concerned that he may be given a particularly harsh punishment as the FA steps up its high-profile campaign to restore respect for referees.
Steve Bennett, the referee, wrote in his official match report that Mascherano reacted aggressively to being shown the red card and that he took an indecent amount of time to leave the pitch. The club will point out that he left the field within 30 seconds of being shown the red card, even though it took the intervention at pitchside of Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, before he headed for the dressing-room.
Liverpool reacted cautiously yesterday to reports suggesting that the protracted takeover bid by Dubai International Capital (DIC) will reach a successful conclusion “within three to four weeks”. Negotiations are continuing between DIC and the club’s owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, but, after a series of false dawns in the saga, officials at Anfield are reluctant to talk in terms of a timeframe.

The Masch was sent off - end of story. He did what every other player does. I personally think that Rooney / Ronaldo / Terry / Lampard etc are probably worse cuplrits but there we go.
But how much had the goalposts moved in the space of 4 days. Cole gets a booking for a really bad tackle - and nothing for the dissent at this decision.
Cure media storm about 'respect for referees'
Next big game - first show of dissent - Masch gets sent off. It was knee-jerk stuff I'm afraid.
What you need is consistency. As much consistency as the consistent kicking Torres got through the game.
But there we go. I think we need retrospective puinishment for any petulance, bad tackles and feigning injury/diving.
Make em more honest!]
Curig Jones, Cardiff,
If the FA is serious about the "respect" agenda they must make an example of Fergusson and Bennett. They need to review the game and see just how awful the ref was, letting one side get away with everything, and penalising the other for the same infringements.
Liverpool players get extra punishment from the FA. Robbie Fowler got a smash in the face against Everton, he had blood streaming from his face. Fowler got a red card, while blueslime didn't even get a warning.
Fowler got hit in the head from behind off the ball by Le Saux, Fowler received the red card.
Paul, wirrel,
The boy was plainly stupid and naive, so if there is a rule on that throw the books at him. The red was more to the refs ego than anything else, cautions and talkdowns normally do it

3-match ban for Ashley Cole? Why not? Isn't it time to be serious about "respect"?
Visoot, Bangkok,
If the FA is serious about the "respect" agenda they must make an example of Mascherano. There are worse players than him around, and worse examples of ref intimidation, but the timing is right. I would suggest 5 games and 100k fine.
