Javier Mascherano has been charged with improper conduct following his sending off in Liverpool's Barclays Premier League defeat at Manchester United.
Mascherano must serve a one-match suspension for the red card, but could now miss an additional two games if he is found guilty.
The 23-year old appeared to question referee Steve Bennett's decision to caution Fernando Torres, and was then shown a second yellow card himself.
An FA statement said: "The charge relates to his reaction towards referee Steve Bennett after being sent off against Manchester United on Sunday, March 23.
"He has until 6pm tomorrow to respond. The case will be heard by a regulatory commission on Friday, April 4.
Mascherano will definitely miss Sunday's Merseyside derby at Anfield, while Liverpool's next two Premier League games are against Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers.

The attitude of players & managers towards referees in football is appalling. Only the Captain has the right to ask the referees to confirm why he has made a desicion . Managers are all blind, standard response 'I didn't see the incident'
Just watch a rugby match to see how players should behave.

He got what he deserved for continual harrassment of the official - something Liverpool players are prone to do (Carragher and Gerrard in particular) and why he wasn't sent off against Middlesborough will remain a mystery to all who follow the game
john garrett, Newcastle, UK
While what he did was stupid it was by no means a particularly bad display of dissent. I have seen english internationals be much more confrontational and not recieve any disciplinary action. Some of them do it regularly.
The laws regarding dissent are too vague and what may be acceptable in the opinion of one ref can be punished by another. While we don't want to see refs being intimidated or abused it would be wrong treat footballers as children in forbidding them from questioning decisions of match officials.
This is not the first time Bennet has sent a player off for merely questioning the correctness of one of his decisions (anyone remember Les Ferdinands comments about him?). I think Mascherano is being treated as a scapegoat.

I'll wait and see whether players from other teams receive similar treatment from refs and the FA. Many worse tackles than Maschs are made and go unpunished, and if that was dissent then MU, CFC et al had better get their shopping lists ready to buy replacements for Terry, Carvalho, Lampard, Rooney, Ferdinand, Neville (if fit), Cole (x2), etc. etc., because by next season they'll all be suspended more often than they can play. One player sent off in the PL all season, at OT, playing for Liverpool, for that !! Re-arrange to make a well known phrase - TARGET SOFT.
