Amid the uncertainty at Liverpool, Rafael Benítez has been sounded out by at least three clubs in Spain, who have expressed interest in tempting him back to La Liga at the end of the season. Barcelona are among the clubs who are monitoring the Spaniard’s situation, but it emerged last night that the Liverpool manager has also been made aware of potential interest from Valencia, his former club, and Atlético Madrid.
Benítez’s priority is to stay on Merseyside, where his family is settled, but his employment prospects at Anfield remain unclear. Although his position is more secure than it was earlier in the season, when Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the club’s American owners, were preparing to sack him after a series of disagreements, little is clear at present, with Dubai International Capital, the private equity investment arm of the Dubai Government, planning a wide-ranging review of all aspects of the club if, as expected, it succeeds with its £400 million takeover bid.
Having improved his relationship with Hicks while guiding Liverpool to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they face Arsenal, Benítez is hoping to stay on regardless of who owns the club next season, but other options exist. Manuel García Quillon, his agent, has been approached by people from or working on behalf of Valencia, Atlético and Barcelona. With doubts over the future of Frank Rijkaard, the Barcelona hierarchy are discussing potential replacements, including Benítez, José Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager, and Michael Laudrup, the Getafe coach.
If he stays at Anfield, Benítez will ask for considerable backing in the transfer market this summer as he looks to assemble a squad capable of challenging for the Barclays Premier League title. He and his staff are making inquiries about several players and are monitoring the form of others, including David Bentley, of Blackburn Rovers.
Benítez has impressed upon his board the need to make changes to the squad and is likely to offload several players. Harry Kewell will leave when his contract expires in June, but there will be other departures, with uncertainty over the futures of Xabi Alonso, John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch.
As expected, Javier Mascherano, the Liverpool midfield player, has been charged with improper conduct by the FA over his reaction to his red card in the 3-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.Mascherano has been given until 6pm today to respond, with the case to be heard by an FA regulatory commission a week tomorrow. He is suspended for the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday and is likely to face a further ban for continuing to argue with Steve Bennett, the referee, after he was shown the red card.
Benítez may get his opportunity to discuss the Mascherano affair with Keith Hackett, the general manager of Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, the referees’ governing body. However, it will not be until the case has been decided by the FA and will take place in private.
Mike Riley, the Premier League referee, will take charge of the matches between Charlton Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Coca-Cola Championship on Saturday and Carlisle United and Nottingham Forest in Coca-Cola League One on Tuesday. It is not viewed as punishment for his failure to send off Ashley Cole in the 4-4 draw between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea last week, more one of the “rest” periods in the lower leagues given to elite officials during the season.
- George Gillett Jr, the Liverpool co-owner, has teamed up with the owner of the Montreal Impact, who play in North America’s second division, to bid for a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, Joey Saputo, the club’s president, said yesterday. “We are in discussions with Gillett Entertainment Group as well as with Major League Soccer to bring an MLS franchise to Montreal,” Saputo said. Reports suggest that they hope to call the team Montreal FC and begin playing in the 2009 season.

"What offence did Ferdinand commit on Torres to get booked"
He was only kicking through the back of his legs ALL afternoon - a point which Torres was trying to make to Bennett when he received his booking for dissent! Lets face it, Fergie's little rant about "protection for Ronaldo" worked a treat for Utd, Torres got none.
I'm not defending Masherano's stupidity, but you can see what drove him towards it. He was booked for his first tackle of the game which was only slightly late, a few mins later a Utd player put in a similar challenge and received nothing. Add that to the treatment dished out to Torres by Vidic and Ferdinand and you can see why the referee angered him so much. If you want to take about inconsistency then please get your facts straight. Why wasn't Ronaldo booked for diving in the 2nd half when his claims for a penalty were turned down??
Rafa would never join Barca given that he was born in Madrid and has such strong connections with the club.
Saranya, Chesterfield,
Rafa should not go anywhere have your other contributors ever been to anfield or even a live game and as for what offence did ferdinand commit on torres he kicked lumps out of him just what fregy is complaining about that haooens to ronaldo yet again double standards dont do it to my team but its ok for man u to do it to yours
C Edwards, LIVERPOOL,
Slack day at the office so best wheel out that Benetiz topic that's been on the back-burner now that LFC's little run of winning games has ended. Its' a shame that no journalist has picked up what a raw deal fans get from the inconsistencies that arise from FA 'crackdowns' following Javier Mascherano's sending off. Did he deserve to be sent off? YES too right. Do the fans deserve to see this level of inconsistency at a crucial time of the year? NO. What offence did Ferdinand commit on Torres to get booked and if this had been a second yellow card what sense would it had made to be sent off in the light of it happening ALL the time, i.e. a push in the back. We pay a fortune to see a game blighted by poor refereeing performances that fluctuate throughout a season on the back of the FA not taking retrospective action on those players who bring about this inconsistency (i.e. Cole). Benetiz's and Queiroz 's are both right; use of video for players AND referees.

Rafa is not going to go to Barcelona where he must report to a President, A football director and Johan Cruyff...at the moment he is the boss at Liverpool. Remember he left Valencia because of interference from the powers at be and I'm sure he is not going to put himself in that position again.

Danny, don't delude your-self, when did Liverpool last win the league, when you won the Champ knockout league you weren't even the top club in liverpool! Benitez is the top coach in europe unless you count coming over the half-way line!
ian, wokingham, england
Rafa, stay at Liv, and if U don´t, come to Real
Javier, Madrid,
David- Equivalent to Liverpool? Are you kidding? Liverpool might of been 3rd and 4th in the league in recent seasons, but they're still one half of the 2 biggest clubs in England. If you're talking equivalents then its Liverpool & Man United equivalent to Barca and Real Madrid. Atletico, Valencia and Athletic are equivalent to .Arsenal, Chelsea & Everton.
Danny Norton, Liverpool, Scouse Republic
Middle tier clubs Valencia and A. Madrid? There position is Spanish football is equivalent to Liverpool's, being third and fourth largest and well backed, with only Bilbao running them close. I'm sure Benitez wouldn't see either as a downgrade, he'd just earn less money as the English Prem is awash.
David, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Barca don't want to play with one striker and 5 midfielders? Like they've been doing for a long while then? That's news to me.
Tim Dobbin, Nottingham, England
Big deal. Middle-tier clubs like Atletico and Valencia will always want to hire someone like Rafa who builds teams that play to avoid losing. Rafa will be employed thru to 2020 because of his CL success. But will a big club really move for him? I doubt it. Barca are Barca, and they don't want to play with one striker and 5 midfielders.
