George Gillett Jr has delivered a damning indictment on his relationship with Tom Hicks, his co-owner at Liverpool, admitting that their partnership has become untenable.
The American claims that Hicks's refusal to sell his stake in the club to Dubai International Capital (DIC) for £400 million has led to Gillett's family receiving death threats. Gillett said he also made an offer to sell his share of the club to Hicks, but his partner took too long to make a decision.
In an interview given to Prime Time Sports Radio in Canada, Gillett Jr said: "This partnership [with Hicks] has been unworkable for some time.
“We gave our partner a long period of time to try to make arrangements to buy us out. We didn’t put pressure on him but he ultimately did not get to the finishing line.
“Because of the things he said, the fans’ reaction has been so negative to him that if we sold to him it has been made untenable for us.
“He threatened to block me selling to Dubai - that was certainly one of the things that made the fans upset."
Gillett added that he believes selling to DIC would put the Anfield club in safe hands. "Lord knows DIC have the means with the oil prices going up every day that money was not even an issue," he said. "I think they would have been very responsible owners. But making that not possible or difficult didn’t endear [Hicks] to the fans."
Revealing the fury that the Liverpool supporters have shown since the owners made an approach for Jurgen Klinsmann to replace Rafael Benitez, the manager, Gillett added: "We get as many as 2,000 emails a week. Ninety five per cent of them have been directed at some of the comments made by my partner.
“The fans don’t want him to have even one share of my stake in the club, based on what they are sending to me. As a result of that we have received many phone calls in the middle of the night threatening our lives, death threats. A number came to the office and my son, Foster, and daughter-in-law, Lauren, have received them.”
Gillett did not reveal what he planned to do with his half share of Liverpool now, but said there were “pieces on the chess board moving”.
“What I do know is that the fans and the fabled history of this club deserves better, and we are going to do whatever we can to prove that,” he said.

i have been a liverpool fan all my life i still remember my father lifting me over the paddock turnstile as i was too young to pay. i even remember billy liddell ruffling my hair as he ran on the pitch. now as an exile kopite living in ancaster ontario i know of george gillette thru the montreal canadiens , the fans were not too sure of him at first but now the love him as he has put them back on the map. i am all for mr . gillette and i think it is tom hicks who should sell out. tom lockley hamilton ontario

Judging by the interview it looks like George thinks its right to sell, the only reason he says this is to detract anger from him. Lets hope that good news is on the way so we can concentrate on football and not business.

George Gillett owns the most fabled and successful (Ice) Hockey team in the world, The Montreal Canadiens. People felt very nervous around here at the prospect of an American taking over a centuryâs old iconic and cultural institution in the heart of French speaking Quebec and ruthlessly trampling it into oblivion.
We couldnât have bargained for a better proprietor. If anything, he has enhanced the cultural and historic profile of the club and brought in a first class management to run it. The club is once more one of the more competitive clubs in the league, on the threshold of being a powerhouse.
Mr. Gillett seems to be an honest, polite and competent individual having fun operating the team, and making money at too. Donât judge a person by where he comes from, what his nationality is, what his religious is, etcâ¦â¦. Each owner is a unique individual. If Mr. Gillett ends up owning and running Liverpool, the fans are in for a lot of fun, and opposing clubs better watch out.

I'm from Monreal and Mr. Gillet is the owner of our Hockey team (Montreal Canadiens). Nobody here is complaining about the way he runs the team even if he came in with no previous experience or knowledge about ice hockey. In fact, the team was not doping so well before he arrived and now we are not far from having a CHAMPIONSHIP team. Thank you Mr. Gillet

I have listened to the interview with George Gillett and he clearly has the future interests of the club at the forefront. He sounds like a decent guy.I am however now convinced Hicks has no such aim.I am appalled to hear about death threats and this is totally wrong and is a side of the clubs support we can do without. When this is sorted out as it will Parry and Moores should do the only honerable thing left open to them and resign. It shows how incompetent they have been in this also.Parry will be fired anyway.

Premiership Clubs are clearly regarded as sound investment opportunities. The potential due to the Premierships global reach must be vast, hence why so many of our clubs are owned by foreign investors. My question is; why are investors from Britiain not seeing the same potential. Perhaps it is harder for them to distance themselves from the ever changing (and often pathetic) criticisms of the fans.
Joe Richardson, York, Yorkshire
Friend of mine, a Liverpool fan asked why as a Manu fan I wasn't gloating over last weeks result . I had to tell him that Liverpool were too easy a target for ridicule these days and I looked forward to the banter being on level terms, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Carol,
Have you ever been to Miami and Chicago airports, say no more.
Your American mate has just bottled owning a football club and is now making excuses.
Andy, Manchester
Andy Brown, Manchester,
This is disgusting. Death threats over who owns a ridiculously rich football club, once again a small minority of idiots are giving liverpool fans a pathetic global image.
Chris, Brooklyn, New York
As a Liverpool FC supporter for more than 50 years I firmly believe an ownership deal with a close affinity to North America is in the best long term interests of the Club. Right now the joint owners are in some sort of spat, but that will be resolved in due course. Meantime rabid fans should take more intrest in successes and failures on the pitch rather than getting twisted on matters they have no right or ability to control.
This Club has had fantastic succes in the last 10 years in Europe, but no manager has been able to make a viable run at the Premiership Championship. Do not blame this 100% on the owners, look towards day-to-day managers. I remain unconvinced that Benitez can achieve this latter goal.
In short it's so easy tyo blame "the owners", instead of looking for the real issues on the field.
All IMHO of course.
Ian, Madison, USA
I'm one of those awful 'Yanks.' I have given 32 years of my life to the UK. When Britons do business in the USA they are treated with cordiality and a warm welcome. heaven knows how many Oscars, Tony awards and Emmys go to Brits. It is one thing for fans to dislike an owner but quite another to issue death threats. Remember the 'Death to Glazer!' hysteria? Are Man U doing badly? Most recently the anti-Semitic slurs against Avram Grant and deatn threats have been unconscionable. No wonder Roman Abramovich, so secular until now, is suddenly embracing his Judaism. With the violence across Britain and children murdering other kids under a haze of alcohol, I suggest Britain get its act together before threatening the lives of Americans wanting to bring their enterprise and investment over here. By the way, there are several American airports and sports facilities that are a delight to visit and are run like a dream. Perhaps if a 'Yank' had runT5 it might be in better shape.
Carol Gould, London, England
Matt, the clubs were in the hands of English people, people whose greed led them to sell to the highest bidder, whatever that might mean for the club and the fans.
Chris, Worthing, England
Football clubs should be kept in the hands of English people who appreciate their history and heritage. In the end, these people are here to exploit the business advantages and care very little about the future of the sport.
Matt, Deal, UK
The sale of LFC to these yanks has to be the worst piece of business in football history . That said , I believe Gillet to be a decent man . More than I can say for Hicks or even Parry .
