Martin O'Neill has called for Liverpool to bring about a swift resolution to
the Gareth Barry transfer saga, warning them he is ready to set a deadline
for the deal to go through.
The Aston Villa manager says he is still waiting to hear from Rafael Benitez
after the Anfield club's last bid, believed to be around £16 million, was
rejected. In the meantime, Barry was forced to play for Villa's reserves
against Walsall on Tuesday night and O'Neill says he has no qualms about
picking the England international for Saturday's Intertoto Cup clash with
Odense.
"It's been unfortunate. We don't know where we stand at this minute," he said. "Liverpool have not officially come back to us in any form of writing. It is a really awkward position here at this minute.
"At some stage or other there will have to be a timescale on it because we cannot just keep going on like this. We have got our own plans to make - and we shouldn't be at the behest of Liverpool Football Club.
"We have to pick up the pieces and I could go on for forever and a day talking about it. It doesn't really matter. We have to see what develops. As I say, we have not heard back from them in an official capacity."
"It's a long-running saga and I wouldn't mind it ending one way or another."
Despite his obvious frustration with the player, O'Neill insists he would prefer for Barry to remain at Villa Park.
"My preference - and hopefully I'm speaking for a lot of Villa fans, if not all of them - is that we would like Gareth to stay at the football club," he said. "That would be great because it will be hard to replace him.
"But we're not sure where Liverpool stand now. It was never mentioned before about them needing to sell some players before they bought - that was never in the system at all. But seemingly it must be part of it."
Villa host Odense, of Denmark, in the second leg of their Intertoto Cup match on Saturday following a 2-2 draw in the away leg. And O'Neill says Barry is in contention for the match.
O'Neill said: "I think that in terms of fitness the game on Tuesday will have brought Gareth on so, if he's mentally tuned in and he wants to go and play, why not?
"Why shouldn't he be in contention for the game? He's a quality player and that's what we're looking for."

AV was excellent last year. Landing 5th or even a top 4 is possible. GB wants instant gratification, but won't get it at LFC. Rafa's more confused than even MON. And LFC will turn on him too when they don't win trophies. It'll be a laugh if AV ousts LFC from the top 4 w/o GB there.

You will have a while to wait then John as MSI have no ties to Mascherano, so not quite sure how they would manage to transfer him to Arsenal....
Lucas, Belfast,
MSI no longer 'own' Mascherano. Liverpool do. Typical ignorance from Manchester. If MON plays Barry in the Intertoto his price will plummet come the January transfer window. Third. A player is only worth what someone will pay. No other bids on the table therefore LFC valuation is what he is worth
Jim, Liverpool, Republic of Liverpool
Which clown thinks msi are going to transfer mascherano to arsnel are just a full on twit. Who may as well give up talking about football, because if you had any knowledge of the modern game you would be fully aware that liverpool bought mascherano for 18 million in january.
Daniel, Huddersfield,
Reading these comments I have never witnessed such a one-eyed, biased, unreasonable grasp of a situation as I have here from Liverpool fans. What is so hard to grasp? Martin O'Neill has consistently set a price - £18m. It is an incredibly basic, straightforward proposition. You take it or leave it.
Mick, Cork, Ireland
Am I right in thinking that Barry has a contract of employment with Villa? That he commited himself to them when he wasn't flavour of the month? I wonder what his reaction would be if he'd had a poor season and Villa now wanted him out? Bet he'd be reaching for the contract he now wants to ignore
Nick, Milton Keynes,
Agree that MON has been harsh on Barry, but he's behaved entirely reasonably as regards Liverpool, whose arrogance is incredible! What position are they in to drive a low price when Villa can afford to leave an unsettled Barry in the reserves? I'll be laughing when MSI transfer Mascherano to Arsenal
John, Manchester,
neil is being unfair. Barry is 27 and has a chance of Champions Leauge football which he deserves. let him go even 15 million is a big profit on a player who has served his dues at Villa.
Paul, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Liverpoool should pay up or move on, this underhand unsettling of players must stop. Spurs and Villa have set a price, Liverpool need to get of the fence now and make a decision.
Stephen Marks, London, England
MON is just being greedy. He's the one without class not Liverpool or Barry.Barry's given 10 good years to Villa & this is how MON repays him?C'mon!Get in the Champions League 1st!Liverpool are been forced to up their fee each & every time. I think that's enough now. MON can get his money elsewhere
Jimmy, London, UK
Liverpool have behaved entirely properly throughout this entire affair. Benitez rung O'Neil, told him we would make a bid, which we did, a bid Villa made public and have been falling over themselves to talk about in public ever since. Rafa has barely spoken a word on it. O'Neill's an embarrassment
Tom Earnest, westcliff-on-sea,
Would O'Neil have acted in the same manner if some other club made a bid for him?? It seems that he is acting in this selfish manner because Liverpool made a bid. Elsewhere he wants to price players according to his liking which is fair however it is unacceptable that he prices finan!!
Matthew Frebdi, Bidnija, Malta, Malta
Carrick and Hargreaves are players that are both being kept out the England squad by Barry on way or another and they both cost United 18 and 26 million respectively. Now, MON and Villa are certainly within their rights to expect at least as much as Carrick cost.
Bledi Jahjaga, Calgary, Canada
How is the ball in our court (Villa), when L-pool have made a bid and it wasn't the asking price? It's up to the Scousers to increase the bid or forget it. Shame they have no money and we do, so we don't need to sell at a lower price.
Darren, Newbury,
Don't think any of the parties are to blame for "unsettling" Barry. We, the fans, are desperate for any news about our teams and the media are only too happy to feed us with whatever comments players, managers, agents choose to make - none of which will have any real influence on Barry's decision.
Steve, London,
O'Neill's hypocricy & arrogance continues to skyrocket. After FOUR bids inc 16m + Finnan he is still 'waiting' for LFC to keep coming back!
Barry may even WORSEN LFC midfield.
Silva,Quaresma would cost less & add MUCH more. Rafa make FINAL 7m bid & walk away.Let O'Neill/Barry rot together.
Ayaz, Wakefield,
Liverpool made three offers, the last of which was £16mil which Villa rejected and now Liverpool are looking at other targets such as Robbie Keane. It's Villa's perogative to say no to an offer and it's Liverpool's perogative not to increase their bid. The balls in Villa's court now.
David, Liverpool,
The impasse is mainly due to O´Neill´s changing position, the refusal to accept an offer, then when 'they' have come, refuse them, then fine and humiliate his Captain and continually moan to the press.
O´Neil has got himself in quite a spot of bother and expect a LIverpool to bail him out
Shaun Dowling, Brasilia, Brazil
Fiver says MON will find some way of attacking Liverpool if they pull out; accusing them of deliberately unsetteling his player whilst overlooking the vastly inflated valuation that he (MON) put on the player. MON is and will continue to be a joke
DR, London,
Liverpool and Barry's behaviour in this matter puts me off football. We know 90% of football people aren't in touch with reality but to treat fans and other clubs with such contempt is a disgrace. Liverpool FC have lost the class they once were renowned for.
Neil, Birmingham, England
