Manchester City's ambitious attempt to sign Ronaldinho has moved a step closer, after Adriano Galliani, the AC Milan vice-president, admitted his club could not compete with City's offer for the player.
Reports suggest Mark Hughes, the City manager, will be given £50 million to spend and he has already admitted he would target the world's top players. Ronaldinho had been reported to favour a move to Italy, but Galliani admits Milan cannot compete with City's financial muscle.
"We simply cannot compete with certain figures anymore," he said. "Manchester City have offered the Brazilian [Ronaldinho] €12 million (£9.5m) a year.
"We can only compete with that if they [Barcelona] give him away for free."
"I cannot ignore that Italian football is now in fourth position in Europe behind England, Spain and Germany."

Some of the best players in the world play in the Premier League and pull English playersv to a higher level. England has world class players in every line except for goal keeping. The problem with the English national team is appointing second rate managers (Cappelo not included).
Marcel Oonincx, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
I think you'll find its 170 english players in the premier league. I think england fail for a variety of reasons, grass roots training is based on head less chilcken approach no tactics no technique, media and fans unrealistic expectations of the talent, bad attitude of players. no team, individuals
Robert Lyttle, Belfast, Northern Ireland
170 players? so your saying of the 92 league clubs there are less than 2 english players in each side-no. the problem is our training isnt focussed on technique like it is in spain or portugal or brazil. the fa should allow clubs 7 subs, but the extra 2 should have to come from the youth system.
Will, grimsby, uk
funny people blame foreign imports as the reason for englands failings at national level yet take the champions league final and you have 10 english players to pick from, if i am correct all of them had or have england caps. (scholes with retirement aside of course)
Mark, STOCKPORT, england
OH NO! my friend told me about this and i told him i would give him £500 if he went to city.
damm!
william collins, Glasgow,
why do ignorant people blame foreign players for the English players short comings.... the fact is if they were good enough they would have got their chance with the big teams...but they are just not good enough...but blaming someone else is the easiest way out
Kitson, London,
Well well well.
So he may really fall for the "Do you want to come and play for Manchester?" blag.
After all, George Weah did.
How long he'd actually stay, and whether he'd actually win city a trophy (for city fans, a trophy is a big silver shiny thing) is another matter.
Jon Leigh, Southern, France
I hope that Ronaldinho never enter the doors at COMS because he is to big, By, Jo, Bentley use more Bianchi, we already have Mpenza. Arshavin from Russia is a star and the fee and the payment of 200.000£ NO NO NO.
One year and we can buy a star out of that money. 2000000£.
We need working player
Frode Thorsø, Hamar, Norway
WOW, Ronaldinho, can come to the premiership and earn a last big pay day! Becks did it, why can't he?
As far as saying our national team is suffering, i disagree. The national team has done NOTHING since '66. And foreign players should not get this blame. The FA is to blame. Plain And Simple.
Wazza, Middlesbrough, England
I hope Ronaldo gets signed to ManCity, because LA Galaxy wants him too, and they have a lot of money to offer.
Frank Honma, Sao Paulo, Brasil
The New World Order is taking shape.
All before us will be unceremoniously crushed.
MJC, Manchester, England
I disagree.
Foreign players is the whole reason why the England team are suffering. Only 170 English players to choose from in the whole of the FA leagues but most them come from the lower leagues.
The Premiership goes from strength to strength but the national team is suffering
Anthony, Valletta, Malta
I think that in the pursuit of greatness, Ronnie should join City and make it great, like legends before him like Maranona at Napoli. The have a good team already with some competant players like Elano and Micah Richards. With the Thai money and a wise manager, they can build a winning team
