Three years after leaving Manchester City for Chelsea, Shaun WrightPhillips made an emotional return to his former club yesterday, with Mark Hughes immediately forecasting that the move will help to revive the player’s flagging international career and turn his team into genuine top-six challengers.
Once touted as the heir apparent to David Beckham on the right side of England’s midfield, Wright-Phillips failed to deliver on his early promise as he struggled to establish himself at Stamford Bridge, but Hughes believes that the winger’s return to City in an £8.5 million deal will ultimately prove as good news for Fabio Capello, the England manager, as him.
Despite his agent claiming that he was reluctant to return to the North West, Wright-Phillips decided that his interests would be best served at City after being told he was surplus to requirements at Chelsea and signed a four-year deal worth £55,000 a week after passing a medical yesterday.
The deal represents an excellent piece of business for City, if not Chelsea, who, having signed Wright-Phillips for £21 million in July 2005, have written off £12.5 million to get the player off their books. “I think it sends a message and a statement about what we’re about,” Hughes said. “I think people understand now that Manchester City is an interesting thought and players want to come and join us. They can see the ambition we have and where we want to go. We have the means to attract top-quality players and that is what Shaun is.
“The adage is that you should never go back, but if he needs anybody to give him advice about that, he should just come and talk to me because I did it [with Manchester United] and it didn’t do me any harm. I have got all the answers for him. We want Shaun to be playing regularly for England and we’re hopeful he’ll do that.”
Ian Wright, the former Arsenal striker and Wright-Phillips’s father, said: “It’s the first time I’ve seen him smile properly for ages because he’s going to play football again.”
