Dimitar Berbatov appears to be close to completing a move to Manchester United tonight, despite Spurs accepting a rival bid of £30 million from Manchester City.
The Bulgaria international was met by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester Airport today and was taken to United's Carrington training ground before initial talks took place.
Berbatov then underwent a medical at Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester, before travelling to Old Trafford, where negotiations have been ongoing with David Gill, the chief executive and are expected to be completed shortly.
As of yet, though, there has been no confirmation from Spurs that they have accepted a bid from United, which presumably would have to match the British-record bid tabled by City later in the day.
Within hours of completing a takeover of the club, the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) has sanctioned an audacious move for the Tottenham Hotspur forward, who had been expected to join United today.
ADUG has wasted no time in signalling its intent in the transfer market after it said that it was determined to make City "the biggest club in the Premier League". Mark Hughes, the manager, has already been tasked with finishing in the top four this season.
Hughes, who is firmly behind the attempt to sign Berbatov, confirmed the club had agreed a fee with Tottenham and that he expected to meet the player this evening to discuss personal terms.
"We’ve made an offer and I think it’s agreed between ourselves and Tottenham," he said. "Now really it’s about the boy making a decision."
When asked if he expected to meet the player today, Hughes added: “At some point yes.
"We’re pretty excited about what’s going on. It’s really important that we have a good season this year.
"I think there has been a lot of disruption and a lot of negative publicity surrounding the club and that’s been wiped away in one fell swoop. Let’s hope we can move forward in a positive fashion."

J. Evans, don't give me that antiUS junk. While not everyone here watches soccer, the ones who do are just as fanatical as any other country.Get with the times, stop sulking over no more british owners/players in your own country. The game is now a business, no more homegrown than any other Int'l Corp

CR7 and Berbatov on the same team will be a deadly pair, watchout the rest of the premierleague. This is the year of the treble. GO MAN. U.

Guys, the best players, the best trainers and the best... owners - all they are not British. Would you tell me were comes your overestimation from? ;) Berba is fantastic - so, enjoy his performance once you have this chance.

What would anyone from Spokane know about football (or soccer as the colonials would have it)?
Same as the Glazer´s, Zilch. Which makes them perfect fodder for United.
As for doing things the right way. Ask Burnley how right was the way their youth team was stolen?

Good to see your up to date with the situation!
City have bid 90 million pounds for 3 players today (not inc. the 40 mill already spent) Villa, Gomez and Berbatov.
We have more bread than Chelsea and more than every club in the midlands put together!!
up the citizens!!

Because no-one - including those who play at the top level - actually likes Moan Utd!
If they would quit being so arrogant and thinking the world owes them all the time, you could go back to the days when everyone's second team was Man United.

United should have bought him two years ago for £12m , now that would have been good business.

Eric, I'll tell you. All the other clubs are backed by rich billionaires with big ambitions (which always fail BTW) And at United we still believe in doing things the right way, and fielding a team, not 11 individuals. That doesn't suit some players (CR7) But in the end we know we're the best anyway

Wait and see Man City have not got 30m to spend on a single player. No doubt he will go to Man U for about 20/25m.

It is of course the fans who pay for the inflated price demanded of and by these players and clubs. What fools!

What should have been done two months ago gets hijacked by City, and United, with it's thin strike force and aging roster, may go without a single new signing. United targets repeatedly spurn them for Madrid or even Arsenal. We are European champions. Why are we so bad at this?
