Analysis: Oliver Kay I Five things Manchester City could also buy for £91million I Italian media aghast at offer I Debate: are Manchester City going to mess this up? | Comment: Gabriele Marcotti I Hughes finds clubs are adding a premium I Hughes told his job is safe
Firstly, can we have your gut feeling on whether this deal will happen?
It's still very difficult to say. The money being offered to Milan is phenomenal, and the money being offered to Kaka is phenomenal, but you just wonder if City are going after the wrong player.
Milan are a very rich club and they have a very, very proud owner in Silvio Berlusconi, who has always refused to sell Kaka, nor any of their star players while they were still in their prime.
Berlusconi has been unwilling to sell Kaka to Real Madrid before now and he's not the kind of guy who is going to cave in easily if you are trying to buy his most prized asset. There is also the fact that Kaka is a very humble man, who is not driven by money at all. He has actually spoken out about the effect of greed and materialism on football, saying "I would never make decisions based purely on money".
At the moment you'd have to say that the only reason for him to join City would be money, so it will be be a good test of his ethics. Having said that, you suspect if there was one footballer capable of resisting the temptation, then it is Kaka.
Can Kaka play in the Premier League?
We have seen players come from Italy before, like Andriy Shevchenko, and fail. But Kaka is only 26 and is in his prime, so you would suspect he would have what it takes to overcome the extra demands that would be made on him physically and mentally.
Just because a player has succeeded in Italy, does not mean they will be a success in England and vice-versa. Look at Ian Rush. You would suspect he would be capable of playing anywhere, but you just wonder whether he might be better suited to a side where he is surrounded by brilliant players, which, at least in the short-term, isn't going to be the case at City.
Is this more a statement about Sheik Mansour's promotion of Abu Dhabi than the development of Manchester City?
There is clearly a lot of desire for Abu Dhabi to bask in the reflective glory of Manchester City. But it has to be glory, it's no good being the sporting equivalent of a circus and becoming a by-word for underachievement. They have to win things so it reflects well on Abu Dhabi.
I can see what people mean when they ask if it's all about the promotion of Abu Dhabi, but I can assure you they really want to succeed in turning Manchester City into the world's biggest club.
