What is going on at Manchester City, the club that are now situated in what has been called “Middle Eastlands”? Rearrange the following: “have taken over”, “the lunatics” and “the asylum” and you will not be far out.
If the new Arab owners are not careful — not that, sadly, they will be particularly aware of this — they could swiftly destroy everything that they are trying to create. Offering a reported fee of £95 million and wages of £500,000 a week to tempt Kaká from AC Milan is ludicrous.
Straight away, the only reason that the brilliant Brazilian would consider joining a mediocre team lying in fifteenth place in the Barclays Premier League becomes crystal clear: the money. What other reason could there be and what basis is that for a harmonious long-term relationship? None, of course.
Were Kaká to arrive in England, his massive salary would not necessarily upset most of his new City team-mates. They would appreciate his star quality, what he could bring to the table.
The jealousy would be minimal. Only the average players, those whose egos outweigh their ability, might be miffed about their financial lot in comparison.
The effect on morale, though, could be devastating. All of the players — except Robinho, perhaps — would suddenly realise that they were dispensable. They might be out the door at any minute, gone, no longer part of the dream. That is not exactly going to generate team spirit, is it?
What City should be doing is rebuilding shrewdly and slowly as, I’m sure, Mark Hughes, their manager, would like to do. Buy the likes of Roque Santa Cruz and Craig Bellamy . . . then home in on a top-eight finish . . . then go for a Champions League place.
Then, and only then, do you go mad, bring in your world superstar, the icing on the cake, as Sir Alex Ferguson has done so successfully at Old Trafford, across the city.
City are aiming too high too soon and it is dangerous. There is no need to jump so quickly, no need to make such a quantum leap at this moment. No normal-thinking manager would want to do this. Talk about trying to run before you can walk.
OK, it does not bear the fingerprints of Hughes — and I have much sympathy for him — but even though he may believe that his position is in jeopardy, he has to stand up to the owners.
I’m sorry, but this is all so typical. It is yet another lamentable tale of people who know nothing about football. Sheikh Mansour and his advisers have got it badly wrong, but is there anyone out there brave enough to tell them? I doubt it.

I have been a City fan all my life, through the very few good times and all the bad, and now we have owners prepared to fund a rebuilding programme on a massive scale. But to spend £95m on one man is just nonsense, why not another three players of the quality of Robinho instead, for the same £95m.
Jim, Ingleton, England
andy- even city could win with 13 players on the pitch! Your stunning wit aside... Robinho, SWP and Micah have Champs league quality, possibly Zabaleta and Joe Hart in time. Not forgetting Ireland, Johnson and Kompany. 3 steps left andy.. Aberdeen eh.... United fan?
CH, Manchester,
CH - only 11 more steps to go
andy, aberdeen,
Is the writer suggesting that Hughes should ask his bosses not to buy the best player in the world because it would make players feel insecure? I totally agree with FJ on that point. And is Hughes' position really that strong? City will remain mediocre until we sign quality. Kaka is the second step
CH, Manchester,
I do not think that 33 years of bulding a team is too quick do you - we have waited and waited and waited - now you would have us wait a bit longer why would that be - why not do it a squick as possible - after all we are now the new bad boys are we not - I do not agree with all the money in
phil, portadown, N Ireland
there are very good players at man city and yes they do need a good defender whilst i'm a real madrid fan who has coveted kaka for five years if city can persuade him to join the blue revolution he can only improve players like ireland and it won't hurt bringing other stars in go for it city
Duncan Bell, york, uk
Surely this works both ways - the players that are already there know they may be dispensable so will work even harder to cement their place in the team. And what better way to raise your profile than by playing with the likes of Kaka and Robinho.
FJ, London,
There's surely not a manager in the Prem who wouldn't welcome a gift-wrapped galactico as sound and dedicated as Kaka. If Hughes couldn't propel a team that included Robinho, Kaka, Shaun WP, Stevie Ireland, Wayne, Kompo, Onouha and Zabaleta into at least the top 8, he's not worth having as manager
Mick Travis, Dublin,
The usual kids in the sweet shop reaction to a new, rich owner. The problem is that if they pay Kaka 500k a week, the likes of Dida, Gattuso and Villa won't come for anything less, and the UAE don't produce THAT much oil.
Mike Basset, Wigan,
What is Cascarino on about, we've tried to buy Santa Cruz Bellamy and Parker and the clubs have said no !! 16 million for Cruz, 10 Million for Bellamy and 12 million for Scott Parker are good honest fair prices... How can we "build from the back"
If no-one is selling.. Sit back and enjoy the ride !
Craig, Salford, Grt Manchester
It goes without saying that all players are dispensable. Signing world-class players should not result in loss of form, it should inspire players to prove their worth to the team. Stephen Ireland has risen to the challenge and reacted in exactly the right way whereas others sadly, have not.
Matthew Miller, Manchester, England
City should be shoring up their defence, not chasing strikers. Going forward they already have an abundance of talent as their goal difference amply demonstrates. It is in defence that they have looked vulnerable. Centre-backs and holding midfielders should be their priority.
Peter Southam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
By simply bringing in 1 or even 11 top players, you don't win trophies on a sustained basis. City must first get a squad of good players, begin to compete in champion's league and thereby attract the best and then go for premiership. Big money can greatly help provided there is patience.
Nat, New Malden, UK
"All of the players ... would suddenly realise that they were dispensable." Well, yes. They realised that the moment the new owners came in. The loss of morale is precisely the reason City have been so poor! Purchasing the good players that caused this fear is the solution to that, not the cause.
Ollie, Northolt,
Well, Mr. Hughes barely has a leg to stand on after City's spotty campaign thus far. He won't be around next season, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind acquainting himself with Kaka for at least these last few months as manager.
Ron, Chicago, USA
Man City should know their place. They are a mid table team at best. They have money that they may only spend on mid-table players. Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool... they have the right to buy the great players like Kaka. If Man City buy him football will be ruined.
Matthew Cavanagh, Glasgow, Scotland
This is the worst most jealous, blinkered type of reporting I've ever seen, when utd started under taggart they spent big, when blackburn won under dalglish they spent big and then there was chelsea and you guessed it... They spent big. so why when its city our city and we desire a trophy a bit of success or an exciting team thats all and every hasbeen and wanna be climbs from there tree and voices concern, well your right there should be concern has we are on the up and nothing is stopping us
phil dale, manchester, uk
Usual nonsense spouted by Cascarino. When Ferguson took over United he spent huge sums at the time on Ince , Webb , Pallister etc and then carried on breaking transfer records with Keane , Ferdinand , Rooney and more lately Berbatov. If a manager has a huge budget he cuts his cloth accordingly.
Matthew, Hove, England
You couldn't be further off. Man City have to break through and get one big signing so that more players of top quality will join the team. Everyone said that Robinho joined the squad solely for the money, but once the Blue Revolution takes over, everyone will look to that transfer just like Kaka's.
Kyle, Grand Rapids,
"Buy the likes of Sata Cruz and Craig Bellamy" - why when we are being held to ransom by rival teams? As if Bellamy is worth more than 7m! and Santa Cruze is worth 12m at most. If we can get a player like Kaka through the door for 100m and in return attract Dida, Gattuso and Villa etc then why not.
Lee, Manchester,
correct me if im wrong but you dont half sound jealous
