It was, Cristiano Ronaldo said, an “unbelievable” night, one that may have taught him a little about why Sir Bobby Charlton called Old Trafford “The Theatre of Dreams”. After his role in Manchester United’s stunning 7-1 victory over AS Roma in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, it was impossible to imagine the Portugal winger wanting to play his football anywhere else, but it is not only in terms of his talent that he has the football world at his feet.
Reports from Spain yesterday claimed that Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, had met a prominent Real Madrid official, Franco Baldini, in London before last week’s Champions League match between Chelsea and Valencia.
Moreover, it was claimed that Mendes offered Baldini assurances that his client would reject the offer of a new contract with United this summer to pursue his ambition of playing for Real, who have indicated that they are willing to break the world transfer record and pay more than the £48 million that it took to sign Zinédine Zidane from Juventus in 2001.
Such matters were not on United’s agenda yesterday, as the club basked in the glorious afterglow of the impressive performance against Roma on Tuesday. It is understood that, while the board is eager to increase his wages above £100,000 a week in the hope of extending his contract beyond the summer of 2010, it will not be panicked into selling him should he reject the new deal, but it is increasingly clear that United will face a severe examination of their resolve over the coming months.
Ronaldo was not the only outstanding performer against Roma — Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs were also, in different ways, devastatingly effective — but it was the Portuguese, yet again, who left his teammates awestruck and searching for new superlatives to describe him. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opined that the 22-year-old was unstoppable, but Patrice Evra, another substitute, went farther.
“At this moment Ronaldo is the best player in the world, no question,” the France full back said. “He is unbelievable. Cristiano can do the same job as [Diego] Maradona or Pele or [George] Best. He can be like them.”
It was not the first time this season that Ronaldo has been described as the best player in the world, but to mention him in the same breath as Maradona or Pele is to open a new debate. These are the players whose positions atop the sport’s pantheon of greats are unchallenged, putting them in a different class from the many outstanding performers — most notably Zidane — since Maradona’s retirement. But, as his annus mirabilis approaches a heady climax, with United in contention to emulate their “treble” triumph of 1999, the compliments are growing in proportion to Ronaldo’s reputation.
“I feel great,” Ronaldo said on his way out of Old Trafford on Tuesday evening. “It was an unbelievable result. When you win 7-1 against Roma in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, it is great. The team played very well, we were very confident and the supporters played their part by helping the team. It was fantastic, amazing for the players, amazing for the club, but now we need to think about the next round.
“This team has great spirit and is now very mature. But we need to carry on like this. I don’t have a preference who we play — AC Milan or Bayern Munich. Both would be tough ties. But in this form we don’t fear anyone.”
Indeed, on Tuesday’s evidence, United are the team to fear in the Champions League.
It had been several seasons since they had produced a resounding victory against top-class European opposition, but their performance against Roma was spellbinding, as illustrated not only by the number of goals but their breathtaking quality.
Ronaldo scored twice and was involved in just about every one of the other five. The only concern for United is that, as his reputation grows, so does Real’s desire to get their hands on him.

Franz Beckenbauer, the Bayern Munich president, has admitted for the first time that Owen Hargreaves could join Manchester United this summer, provided that the price is right. Speaking before Bayern’s Champions League defeat by AC Milan last night, Beckenbauer said: “If it is right that there is an offer of €25-30 million [£17-£20 million] I would seriously consider it.”

CR is very very good, but a way to go to be mentioned in the same breath as pele, maradona, giggs and charlton. don't think best is in top ten. only played when he felt like it and never played against the best ie world cups (not his fault). pele scored 1300 goals at top class! who has scored a better goal than giggs against a great defence ie arsenal
bob, langkawi, malaysia
i despair that ronaldo is mentioned already as one of the greats.he is performing brilliantly this season but i want to see if he can continue.ronaldinho, zidane and henry are labelled as the best because they won trphies and continued to perform.as usual the british press is hyping up a good player

Please dont compare Ronaldo to the Hand of God. I would like to see Ronaldo play for a club like lets just say Westham (without the great TEVES) and win for them the Premier Leauge, Champions Leauge and a UEFA Cup, just like Maradona did for Napoli and won Seria A, UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia and lets not forget what he did in the 86 World Cup, and who can forget that spectacular 60 meter weave goal commonly referred to as the Goal Of the Century aganst England who had a great team. Look Ronaldo is a great player the most outstanding at this moment and Man U are lucky to have him, but like always as soon a player puts on a great performances with some great skills they compare him to the great Diego.List : Teves, Messi, Ronaldo(brasil) Ronaldinho, Platini, Baggio, and now Cristiano Ronaldo and the list go on. Ronaldo he has a long way to go to compare him to graets like Maradona or even Pele.
There is only one Diego Maradona.

Playing in Spain has been every great player's dream. It is wise for Ronaldo to Basque in the sun while he is at the top. From Soccer living dictionary

CR will only go to Spain if United let it happen. They need to sign this boy for the next ten years and pay him accordingly. I do not understand why United have not rapped up this deal already, it scares me.
I hope they are not trying to be cheap with this lad, hell it's not like they dont have the money, you pay the best player in the world, the best salary in the world.
This boy is destined to become one of the all time greats of this game, and United need to dip into those damn millions to keep him. It will be a monumental mistake if they dont.
David the Red, Toronto, Canada
By the time his new contract comes to an end (at age 27)Ronaldo will be the greatest player ever to have set foot on this planet.
UNITED YOU BETTER SIGN THIS BOY TO 2017, and break the bank doing it.
David the Red, Toronto, Canada
I couldn't wait for CR to leave England after the World Cup. The treatment that he endured from the English fans and press was just un excusable and I wished that the rumors of him leaving were true. Despite this, he has put the blinders on and focussed on his gift; becoming the best footballer ever, both in amazing skill and ability to entertain.
Since the WC, I have come to believe that the best place for CR is Man U at the moment. The team is young, talented and capable of unbeleivable accomplishment.
Sadly, I agree with those that say that CR will be in Spain by summer's end.

If he hates England so much he wouldn't have stayed after the world cup, you can tell by the look on his face and his performance he's a team player and he wants to play for the team. Why he would want to join Real is beyond me, as someone said they don't have the foundations like man united, if they had good scouts and a good youth system ronaldo would probably already be in their squad. They're going to have to realise they can't just slap £54M on a player simply because they want him, he's matured as a united player and you can tell he wants to stay for a long time. His agent is only interested in the money he can make from ronaldo's sale and not in the intrests of Cristiano himself. These rumours are getting boring, ronaldo has reiterated many times before he wants to stay at united.
David Quinn, Strabane,
Kaka is surely the best player in the world, no doubt
Raffaele, Milan,
I'm probably too young to comment on whether he is as good as Pele or Maradona. Arguably, only those who've seen them all play could make a valid judgement. It is safe to say though that he is the best at the moment in terms of the excitement he gives the fans. It would be a travesty if he were to leave us.
Yusuf Adam, London, England
Dont get carried away with CR7 leaving man utd, Fergie is the magic behind everything c.ronaldo has achieved. if he does make the mistake of leaving man utd, we wont cry for him because we will be singing another name, probably Nani and they will be calling him a multi million euro flop in Spain.
Simon, Gaborone, Botswana
Ronaldo has the ability to become better than anyone in footballing history. But if he moves to Real then it will become clear that his brilliance is limited to his feet. Nothing between his ears. Madrid is a joke. My heart breaks for Ruud. What a waste!! Still, In Fergie We Trust.
Rezwan, Manchester,
Why would Ronaldo leave Man U from Real. European teams cannot compete with the Premiership teams. 3 Premiership teams in the semis. 3rd year running of a Premiership team in the champions league final.
All the greatest players are currently playing in England or moving here. e.g Raul wants to join Liverpool this summer.
Robert, London,
Patrick, I agree that it's a bit early to compare him with Pele, but quite strong arguments can be made about Kaka and especially Robinho.
Robinho's greatest achievements are in the relatively weak Brazilian league, and he has been quite a disappointment since arriving in Madrid. He has the skill, but not the ability to reproduce it consistently in such a competitive league.
Kaka is a marvellous player, and arguably the key player for both Brazil and Milan, but what has he "done for his club and national side"? Neither have won any major honours with him. Ronaldo (who is nearly three years younger) is by far the most important player for a Portugal side that has reached the final and semi-final of the last two big competitions, as well as ManUtd's best player.
Tim, Norwich, UK
Real Madrid are always doing stupid things like this. Paying silly money. They can never find them early enough like what Manchester did, and they don't develop enough of their youth. When they find players they like, it's too late, and they end up breaking all these record transfer fees and the players are all old and slow, like Beckham and Zidane when they got to Real. It's not a smart way to manage a club. Part of what makes ManUtd so good is because they're managed and administered well, and have good youth and scouting systems and are financially sound. But of course, Real are Real ... Galacticos ... what a joke.
David L, London, UK
Every time some of present players have great performance, we begin doing comparisons that are not valid yet. Maradona won a world cup alone (who remembers other argentinian players in 1986?). C. Ronaldo is a great footballer, but he still has to demonstrate his value on the pitch. It is not sufficient to win a single match, even thoug 7-1 (I 'm so happy because I am Lazio's supporter...), to consider Ronaldo as decisive as Pelè or Maradona.
Alessandro, Rome, Italy
todd you crazy. cr7 is not the best. he is brilliant but not the best. i reckon the best was Johann Cruyff. Ronaldo cant do what he did, cruyff was better. You cant say one player is like another, they all different and unique. But cr7 is not the best.
Ahmed, brisbane, australia
Ron is a very good player, but he is still miles behind Diego or Pele.... In fact, if he becomes at least 50% of what Diego was, he will conquer the world.... First of all, he has not won anything significant like a world cup... Diego did it all by himself once and almost did it twice....Let Ron do something like that in a world cup consistently...then people can judge him...
Abhilash Kunniramath, Bangalore, India
CRonaldo does not have many reasons to have a transfer to Spain right now. Manchester is a perfect ground for him to improve and flourish. He seems to have found his place and mates. Presently what Madrid only has is a full purse but they keep buying players and trainers without concept or future plans, one CRonaldo would not save them from more humiliation till they do not provide other 10 top-players and team-spirit like in M Utd.
Susan, Budapest,
Could be good for Utd - Ronaldo's too selfish. He had the luck against Roma, but you can't rely on him to score against the top European teams.
Schaf, Cardiff, UK
It's true that Ronaldo doesn't have the silverware to be in the category of the greats, but the fact that they're even uttering his name in the same breath is at least a testament to his other-worldly football. The difference with Cristiano, versus the Peles and Maradonas, is that a lot of their genius was recognized after the titles were won. His talent and brilliance is so obvious right now that it is staggering to imagine what his legend will become after he helps Man Utd and Portugal pick up the prizes. I really hope he doesn't wind up at Real Madrid, though -- in its current state, it's a grazing pasture for stars on their way out, whereas Man Utd is just ramping up again. It's a question of the story he wants his career to have, or some quick cash -- and I hope he does the right thing and picks the former.
Karen, Los Angeles,
It would be nothing short of catastrophic if we couldn't hold on to Ronaldo, but why would he want to go to Madrid at this stage. He is only 22 and Madrid are about 3 or 4 years away from Champions League success. Utd have built a good core and with Ronaldo we have the potential of being better than the 1999 team.
Gareth, Enniskillen, Ireland
CR7 is the best footballer ever. Better than zidane, pele, maradona, best...etc. This is the TRUTH!
todd, norwalk,
Pele and Maradona? Let him single-handedly win a world cup or two first and then we can start thinking along these terms. He has a bright future no doubt, but players such as Kaka and Robinho have done more for their club sides and national teams over the last two to four years than Ronaldo.
patrick, Los Angeles,
He is Gone in the summer ... rumor has it he hates England. Simple as that. It rains toi much for his taste.
I think it is sad ... it would have been great to see him at Man U for another 10 years. But that is no longer the natur of the business.
Fred, Madrid, Spain
