Sir Alex Ferguson hinted yesterday at a new level of understanding over Louis Saha’s injury problems, which have consigned him to spend another FA Cup Final day on the sidelines, but the France forward is aware that his future at Manchester United will hinge on talks next week, when he hopes that his position at Old Trafford will be secured.
Saha has no desire to leave United, where he signed a new 3½-year contract as recently as December, but he has been left fretting about his future in recent weeks, with Ferguson dissatisfied by the player’s cautious approach to his rehabilitation from hamstring and knee injuries. The latter means that the 28-year-old will play no part in Saturday’s final against Chelsea – the fourth time he has missed a final, having done so in 1999, 2004 (when he was cup-tied after his move to United from Fulham) and 2005 – but, with a scan confirming that the injury is more serious than United’s medical staff thought, he received a public vote of confidence yesterday.
“It happens in football that sometimes a player gets a lot of injuries and you can’t apportion blame in any sense of the word,” Ferguson said. “Louis is the type who is built for speed and therefore over the years he has had hamstring problems. If you look at his record over the years he has had injuries and we were aware of that when we signed him.
“But he is such a fantastic striker we took that chance and in some ways we’re pleased at that because he has made a good contribution when he has been available. He has been a marvellous player for us, so we just accept it is part of the game.”
However, Saha is not certain of his place at Old Trafford next season, with Ferguson exploring the possibility of signing a striker such as Samuel Eto’o from Barcelona, Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur or Michael Owen, another prone to hamstring injuries, from Newcastle United. A planned conversation next week between Ferguson and Saha’s agent, Ranko Stojic, should make his future clearer.
Ferguson is dreading the prospect of Saturday’s match going to penalty shoot-out, having lost the 2005 final to Arsenal in similar circumstances. “If you look at my record in penalty shoot-outs, it’s diabolical, so I won’t be looking for penalties,” the manager said.

I cannot understand the rumours linking United to Owen!
He is past his best - and his catalogue of injuries will take their toll on him!
I don't think Dong Fangzhou will EVER make it at OT!
Most likely we will bring through the younger Brandy (electric pace), Campbell & Wellbeck -athletes all!
Jospin van Orly , Amsterdam,
I saw Saha on the bench against Wigan so I hope he's fit for the CL final, as Utd need a striker on the bench. Hopefully he scores the winning goal before he does leave.
I think Oliver Kay's has got his finals confused. Utd are playing Chelski on Wednesday 21st May and not on Saturday in the FA cup

To be honest, replacing one injury prone striker with another would be plain stupidity.
The idea of having Rooney and Saha as United's main strikeforce next season doesn't appeal either.
A top quality striker must be a target this summer, Berbatov being the priority and the likes of Bent, Huntleaar and Tevez being alternatives.

I can't really understand united wanting to sign Owen, if the talk is true. He is a good player, but I don't think he has the physical presence to succed, which he would need playing as the out-and-out striker at ManU. I would like a good UK based forward though, or one of ManU's young strikers to step up. We have all forgotten Rossi too easily, who has scored lots in Italy, while I would love to see Dong make an impact.
Dave, Newcastle,
morally, owen should be staying with newcastle.
even if he didnt break down, I could not stomach
the sight off him in a united shirt after watching him
play for liverpool all those years.
kevin, usa,
As a United fan I can categorically say I would not welcome Michael Owen at United. He is constantly injured and isn't half the player he promised to be after the 1998 World Cup. No.1 target definitely Berbatov!

Buying Owen and letting go of Saha would be one of the dumbest things possible.
Its like geting rid of someone who misses 18 matches a season for another player who misses 28 matches a season and does nt score at all..
I think Fergie should stick with Luis but get another striker anyway..
Kabir, Singapore,
the best way for the career of owen is Man Utd., Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal!, please Nufc. sell michael, for his future

Saha is one of the finest forwards in the premiership when he has a clean bill of health, he is not only strong and athletic but he can also use either foot. I think Ferguson should keep him for next season because he is United's only top class centre forward.
