Gabriel Heinze, the disaffected Manchester United defender, has been offered to Real Madrid and Barcelona at a discounted fee in a last-ditch attempt to prevent the Argentinian from pursuing a move to Liverpool.
A Premier League arbitration panel meets tomorrow to rule on Heinze’s future, but in a new twist to an increasingly malevolent saga, it has emerged that Spain’s leading two clubs have been asked if they would like to sign the player for less than the £6.8m United named as his “release price” in a letter to Heinze’s agent.
The development may be a further signal of how desperate United are not to sell him to Liverpool. Heinze says the letter gives him permission to join any club willing to pay £6.8m, as Liverpool are. United insist it was always made clear to Heinze that he would not be allowed to move to one of their main Premier League rivals. Lyon, the French club, have expressed a willingness to meet the £6.8m valuation and there is also interest from Juventus in Italy but Anfield is Heinze’s favoured destination.
It is thought to be unlikely that Real Madrid or Barcelona will offer a way out of the mess. Despite the opportunity of acquiring a top international at a reduced price, Real have other transfer priorities. The Spanish champions are still pursuing Chelsea’s Arjen Robben and Daniel Alves of Sevilla, who would each cost in the region of £20m. Barcelona are believed to be happy with their options at left-back, having recently signed Eric Abidal.
Heinze has given no sign he will back down over his wish to become the first player to move directly from United to Liverpool since Phil Chisnall in 1964. It is understood, indeed, that the defender is prepared to take his case to Fifa should the Premier League rule against him.
At the centre of the dispute is the letter, given to Heinze’s agent, Roberto Rodriguez, and signed by United’s chief executive, David Gill. United told Rodriguez that their valuation of the player was £6.8m and that he could negotiate with interested clubs. No exceptions were named but Gill says Rodriguez was made aware at a subsequent meeting that offers from Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal would not be considered.
A measure of the saga’s bitter nature is that it is believed a tape recording was made of a conversation between Gill and Rodriguez to be used as evidence in the event of the case ending up in court.
Heinze is in full training with United but Sir Alex Ferguson indicated he will not be considered for selection today. Ferguson and Gill have stated it is still possible for Heinze to remain at Old Trafford and play for United, despite him seeking a move to his club’s fiercest rivals. Their anger is directed towards Rodriguez, whose conduct a United source branded “ungrateful”.
In legal terms, the dispute is a contract issue between Heinze and United, and Gill has said he has “no issue with what Liverpool have done”. The Anfield club are convinced that Heinze will win the fight and Rafael Benitez has kept a place open for the Argentinian in his squad.

Doesn't this constitute a restraint of trade? Outside football it's not possible to obstruct an employee from joining a rival firm although there are covenants in the form of time periods during which a former employee cannot take up a position with a rival firm - anyway I am sure most people know this. Point is, does football operate outside normal employment law?
sonny, london,
Yes John of course .... I can sense your teeth grinding as you read this .... LOL!!!
If you know any Utd songs .... Can you tel us the lyrics with Heinze in the song please ?
We may need to borrow the lyrics .... LOL!!!!

what had chelski done in the premiership prior to verons arrival? what have chelski done since heinze has been there? more to the point: what had veron done at manure? irish people shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. heinze should think about how the fans and clubs themselves of newell's and rosario central would feel about him moving between them. or better still, what would heinze himself think about moving between them? i'm a neutral in all this but i loved watching him play, now i'd just be happy for him to leave england.

If it goes to the courts I wonder if Heinz will make a constraint of trade case. Would be a ground breaking case of bosman proportions if it went this way and he wins.

Ossie, your obviously a bin dipper fan i would have now problem in heinze going to the EPL 4th best team, as his best days are behind him.
John , Oliva, Spain
its nothing to do with rival teams. everyone knows that utd cant be seen to let a fan's favourite and someone who has captained the team go to liverpool. its causing uproar on fan sites. also ossie's point about survival though tongue in cheek i'm sure is looking incresingly accurate lol
sean, dublin, ireland
utd just dont want to sell him to liverpool. fans would revolt. nothing to do with rivals for league. what about veron? ok for him to go to chelsea. hypocrisy.
sean, dublin, ireland
this reader clearly has no comprehension of why or what this rivalry really means,i doubt if hes ever been to a United v the criminals fottball match so how would he know!!....There are four ingredients before a contract is mad.1.offer.2 acceptance..3. consideration..4.intention to create legal relations...Heinze sined for United and should stick buy this.A PIECE OF PAPER without those ingredients can never nullify a formalised contract that presently exist.roll on beatinhg the "cursed " criminals ie remember Hysel and Hillesborough!!!!!!!!!!!!
brian, hull, uk
double standards from sir alec. He doesnt want heinze joining a rival club but was happy to try and get Viera to move to Man u when he was at arsenal
raj, london, uk
Ossie, I cannot believe that you don't understand why we would not sell a player to a domestic rival, let alone Liverpool. Most businesses would not allow members of staff to leave their employment and take up a position with a direct competitor, United are doing the same by insisting that he doesn't go to a domestic rival, namely Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool. The rivalry between the clubs has been going on a lot longer than SAF has been at United and runs a lot deeper than just between the football clubs. And as for suggesting SAF should be more worried about survival, don't make me laugh. Because we've drawn 2 games must obviously mean that the over the course of the season we are not going to win a game!!! Why don't we save all the players energy for the European Championships and give the Premier League to Everton now???
Nik Caldeira, Manchester,
Its time for sir Alec to stop throwing his toys out of the pram and allow the player to move on as if it is correct that united were prepared to let him go for 6.8 million then they showed there intent that he was no longer required. As Liverpool were the club to make the offer why all the fuss no wonder there is a hatred between the rival fans when it is quite clear that AF is responsible for what I would conceive as Incitement to Hatred Grow up Sir AF and let the player move on to whatever club he wishes. At this present moment it is my understanding that Liverpool have never won the premiership title and looking at the current league standings Sir A should be more worried about survival than there so called rivals.
