Mikaël Silvestre will miss the rest of the season after damaging knee ligaments during Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Everton. An X-ray yesterday revealed that the injury, which occurred when he twisted his right knee in the first half at Goodison Park, is worse than was first feared.

The injury is a blow to Silvestre but also to United, who now have only one recognised left back, Patrice Evra, in their first-team squad. John O’Shea would offer some cover for Evra, but he, along with Darren Fletcher, also suffered knee ligament damage last week. Danny Simpson, Gerard Piqué and Jonny Evans will be considered to understudy Evra until the transfer window opens in January.

The loss of Silvestre adds to United’s unhappiness over the departure of Gabriel Heinze. The Argentina defender moved to Real Madrid last month, but only after a lengthy courtship with Liverpool. Reports in South Korea suggest that Ki Sung Yeung, the 18-year-old FC Seoul midfield player, will be invited for a trial with United.
