Eight days after Chelsea played a Champions League match in front of only 24,973 spectators, Manchester United expect to record an attendance of more than 70,000 for their Carling Cup third-round tie against Coventry City this evening, although that impressive figure may be announced against a backdrop of empty seats at Old Trafford, or, at least, discontent among many of their supporters.
Under a controversial ticketing scheme, which has been made compulsory this season, United’s 57,000 season ticket-holders are required to buy tickets for every match in all three cup competitions, regardless of whether they wish to attend. With Coventry expected to take at least 11,000 supporters to Old Trafford, the official attendance is guaranteed to be at least 68,000, but while the figures delight those in the Old Trafford boardroom, the scheme is deeply unpopular among United fans, who see it as symptomatic of the unwelcome changes since the Glazer family’s takeover of the club in 2005.
“I wouldn’t like to estimate the number of knockdown tickets I’ve been offered for this match from season ticket-holders who don’t want to go, but have been forced to shell out for these tickets,” Mark Longden, of the Independent Manchester United Supporters’ Association, said. “The proof of the pudding will be in the eating, when we see whether there are huge empty spaces for this game.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if there are. I don’t resent paying top dollar for matches that I really want to see, but I don’t like being forced to see a game that I can’t afford or I have less interest in. That’s why I no longer have a season ticket.”
The club have defended the Automatic Cup Scheme, which was first introduced on a non-compulsory basis for the 1999-2000 season. “Three quarters of our season ticket-holders were already signed up to the scheme voluntarily,” Phil Townsend, the club’s director of communications, said. “We believe that we still offer great value for money in terms of ticket prices and the entertainment on offer and we are committed to discount ticket prices for the Carling Cup, providing our opponents agree.”
At least those United supporters who are at Old Trafford this evening, reluctantly or otherwise, may be offered a glimpse of Wayne Rooney among the lesser-known youngsters whom Sir Alex Ferguson will use in this season’s Carling Cup, which is low on the manager’s list of priorities.
Ferguson suggested last Friday that either Rooney or Louis Saha, who have just returned to the first team after spells on the sidelines because of injury, would be used as back-up for a youthful United team, but he added yesterday that the England forward has been “in my ear wanting to play” and, not for the first time, begging to be captain.
If he does start against Coventry, Rooney is likely to be entrusted with the captaincy for only the second time in a competitive match for United, with Ferguson planning to field a team that will include Tomasz Kuszczak, Phil Bardsley, Gerard Piqué, Jonny Evans and Chris Eagles, as well as at least one of the summer recruits, Anderson and Nani.

While i m against the cup ticket sheme i can't let people say that there is season ticket at Manchester priced 1000£. The dearest is at 836 and the cheapest 475£, regardless of the ticket sheme of course. it s too high of course and there is united diehards who can't go at old trafford anymore which is a shame but this doesn't allow to say things that are wrong.
So to say that a few years ago people were paying 400£ and now they have to pay 1000£ is just nonsense as it s not possible.
United till i die.

This disgraceful scheme even includes children in the family stand. I can't take my eight year old to all the evening kick offs for obvious reasons but I still have to pay for his seat. They won't even allow me to pay to upgrade his seat so I can take another adult with me. Financially stupid, morally corupt AND an empty seat. (Easy to sleep at night Mr Gill?)
Phil., Chester,
When season ticket prices and, pertinately, conditions were announced at the end of last season, I wrote to David Gill, MUFC's chief executive, to complain about the Cup Ticket Scheme. It may be very well for United to bleat on that 75% of season ticket holders were already members but I challenge that position. I personally know of about a dozen people who withdrew from the scheme prior to it now being compulsary. I also know of many people who have resigned their season tickets and who resent the present season ticket costs. If they persist to rise I will not renew for next season. And is it also a concidence that the visitors area of Old Trafford has been increased in size? If United can "leave many fans disappointed" (their words) for each home game, why increase the size of the visitors section. Some things just do not add up at OT and explains why many fans feel that they are treated with disdain. I have been watching MUFC at Old Trafford since 1965/6.

Are the foreign owners really here because they have become fans of our teams (but seemingly only the big ones which have the potential to make large profits)? At present, and at Manchester United in particular, supply and demand indicates that supporters can be exploited - but even the most ardent supporter will eventually say, "enough's enough", if they are being blatantly ripped off. I predict that the bubble will burst eventually; some foreign owners will cut and run and several big clubs will go the way of Leeds United.

Manchester United season tickets NEVER included cup games.
Even now they don't, but they do carry the requirement to buy cup games even if the season ticket holder doesn't want them or isn't in a position to even use them.
The automatic cup scheme was introduced as a courtesy to those fans who wanted to go to all the cup games and saved them from having to apply for every match.
It is now compulsory to be in it and it is being used to squeeze yet more money out of United fans. 75% of current season holders had no choice about whether to buy these cup tickets or not.
In just two years a £400 season ticket has gone up to well in excess of £1000 but thanks are due to Sir Alex, for saving us a few quid on the League Cup.
Now just need an all away draw FA Cup run...

This Game is not being televised in any country world wide. Only the small crowd (in Man Utd Terms) will see all the empty seats when the attendance is announced over the P.a.
I'm a lifelong United fan from Salford and i will not attend Old Trafford ever again, Disgusting.
Alan, Salford, England
Season tickets always used to inclued cup games up to the semifinals. It's only the price that's changed!
Martin Levy, London,
It's absolutely ridiculous, this. If United get away with it, then within 2-3 years you'll be seeing other clubs implementing it.
