Ryan Giggs, the Manchester United midfielder, today attended Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE from the Queen for services to sport.
The 34-year-old Welshman was given a day off by his manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who himself was knighted after leading the club to the unprecedented treble of European Cup, Premier League and FA Cup in 1999.
“I’m lucky to play for such a great club for such a long time and have a successful career,” Giggs said. “He [Ferguson] had been down a couple of times before and just said enjoy it.”
Giggs has been at Old Trafford since 1990. He has played 736 times for United and scored his 100th league goal in the 4-1 win over Derby County on Saturday.
Among the other sportsmen recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list when it was originally released in June were Ian Botham, the former England Test cricket captain, who became a knight, Teddy Sheringham, the former England footballer, now an MBE and Terry Griffiths, the 1979 world snooker champion, who was appointed an OBE.
