If the FA Cup victory over Arsenal at the weekend demonstrated the balletic beauty of Manchester United, their battling qualities were to the fore at the Stade de Gerland last night as Sir Alex Ferguson’s team came from behind to claim a crucial late equaliser against Lyons.
Having taken the lead through the imperious Karim Benzema, the French champions looked like holding on for a memorable victory, but with only three minutes remaining, Carlos Tévez, a substitute, popped up to score an equaliser that completely altered the complexion of the tie.
With an away goal, United will be firm favourites to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they welcome Lyons to Old Trafford in just under a fortnight’s time, but Ferguson and his players will have their hands full.
The Barclays Premier League champions were given a thorough examination by Lyons, but on a night when they were frustrated for long spells by a team who got their tactics spot on, it was United’s perseverance, as opposed to their other vaunted qualities, that paid off.
When Michael Carrick’s shot was blocked, moments after Cristiano Ronaldo had had a free kick tipped aside, United’s best chance appeared to have gone begging. But two substitutes combined for what was probably a deserved equaliser. Nani launched the ball back into a chaotic goalmouth and Tévez, the Argentina forward, found enough space to stab it into the roof of the net.
Up until then, Lyons had excelled at closing down the space and hurrying United into mistakes, but while it was a great collective team effort, Benzema, who was outstanding right up until his substitution four minutes before Tévez’s intervention, deserved special mention.
It is not hard to see why Ferguson covets the highly rated France forward, or why Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyons president, has put a £42 million price tag on the 20-year-old. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have rarely had such a torrid time of it.
Everything had clicked nicely in to place against Arsenal, but as good as United were, Arsène Wenger’s team were simply asking for trouble. Lyons were never going to roll over in such meek fashion.
It is one of the harsh realities of life at United that Nani, Darren Fletcher and Carrick should find themselves relegated to the substitutes’ bench. All three had been outstanding against Arsenal, but when players of the calibre of Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves lie in wait, Ferguson can hardly be blamed for ringing the changes.
They did not have quite the desired effect, though, and it was only with the introduction of Nani and Tévez that United upped their tempo.
United’s main threat before then had come from Giggs. The Welshman joined that select band of players who have made 100 Champions League appearances and he seemed determined to live up to the occasion.
Giggs’s best moment came in the 25th minute, when he delivered a deft ball with the outside of his trusted left boot into the path of Wayne Rooney, but having given Jean-Alain Boumsong the slip, the England forward elected to chip Grégory Coupet and was thwarted.
Coupet did well whenever he was called upon, although Lyons had a couple of chances either side of Benzema’s stunning 54th-minute strike. Sidney Govou had an effort blocked and Ferdinand nearly sliced the ball into his own goal from Jérémy Toulalan, before Benzema had Edwin van der Sar diving low to his right.
Some Lyons supporters had attempted to distract Ronaldo by shining a laser in his eyes, but their players did not need any assistance, certainly not when Benzema bisected Ferdinand and Vidic. Toulalan was alert to the young striker’s darting run and threaded through a pass. In a blur, Benzema controlled the ball with one foot before thrashing it across Van der Sar with his left. “It was a fantastic goal,” Ferguson said.
Saturday had provided compelling evidence that Rooney is more than capable of playing alone up front, provided that he is given the support, but it came only in fleeting spells against Lyons.
There were a couple of flashes of brilliance from Ronaldo, but the Portugal winger was largely subdued and Rooney became increasingly isolated until Nani and Tévez injected the desired cut and thrust into the visiting team’s play.

No Mr writer, Giggs was NOT influential. You probably based that comment on watching the highlights and noticing he had oassed to Rooney. Apart from that, he was totally useless. So was Scholes. As much as these two have been legends for United, their time has gone. Becks, Butt and Neville no longer feature in United's team and neither should those two anymore.
It's scandulous that Fletcher and Nani had to be dropped so Giggs can enjoy his 100th game. His next game was always gonna be his 100th so Fergie should have picked him in a meaningless group game instead and gotten that out of the way for the crunch matches.
Good play by United, though a bit average. But Lyon showed nothing to scare us. Benzema's goal was their only decent effort whereas we came close on several occasions.
0-0 should do in the return. Perhaps we could use this 'away goal' rule for our advantage for once. We have always lost on the away goals rule except once in 1983. What gives?
Charbel, Houston,
Lets see the critics - critizes man utd now - Liverpool totally demolised Inter, and were still critizesd....... Lyon Outplayed Utd and should of won.
Lets look at in this way - Man Utd have won the leage over the past 10 years by scroing LAST MINUTE goals.... fair play a game is 90min +et, but when any other team scored a late goal - they get critized!.
Its ridiculous!..
jugjeevan lal singh, nawanshare,
rooney can play on his own up front. so could van nistelroy. however, neither of them should ever have been asked to do it.
fergie would hate to be seen as naive in europe, hence the ever-present 4-5-1 away. but that is not "good tactics", it's just a different (and rather unattractive) rut. it's not as if he even understands how to play it properly, hence picking midfielders who are too old and slow to make it work and leaving the lone striker isolated.
united dominated possession, but created very few chances. a couple of good blocks by defenders and a typical miss from rooney with only the keeper to beat is not much to shout about.
yes, they should win at old trafford. but they should have won last night. it is not sensible to rely on the second leg when the tie could have been put to bed last night with a more positive attitude. united were caught with a sucker punch anyway, even with the containment tactics.

This game shows why Utd will fail again in Europe this year. Lyon are a good home side and should have won last night, but had Utd been up against Madrid/Barca this tie would have been all over.
They don't have it against top european clubs.
D.Dent, Ipswich,
Much as i respect Scholes and Giggs i wonder if their inclusion yesterday owed more to loyalty than pragmatism.
United were a completely different team last night compared to the weekend, more sedentary with much slower counter attacks
It was only when the old guard were removed with barely 30 minutes to go did united look to have the speed and fire needed to breakdown Lyon's defence.
I hope the lesson won't be lost on Fergusson

A Webb, what game did you watch? Outplayed, no chance! Lyon were very organised with a back line reminiscent of Arsenal in the early nineties. They defended the edge of their box and no further back, they pushed out wide too so United were forced to go for the difficult ball most times. In saying that, United didn't really have much defending to do apart from 10-15mins in the first half and about 5 in the second. Agreed Benzema was quality, but Govou was their best on the night. This is also not the first article by James Ducker to belittle the efforts of Manchester United. How he thought the equaliser was just about fair i'll never know! Fair play to Lyon, but weren't they supposed to be the home team last night? Personally, i'm glad it was a hard fought draw. Keeps the feet on the ground after the Arsenal game and gives us the edge for the return!
Shane P, Edinburgh,
Ahhhh Dr Evil demands One milllion dollars to deflect the 'Laser' beam from the lad Ronnie's eyes.
Go on pay him off Fergie, it's not like united are short of a bob or two is it!
No other result than a United win at a canter.
Jeremy, Farnham,
It's Lyon, not Lyons.
Pierre, Paris, France
United were outplayed! But in classic united style they come back last minute against the odds, makes the game beautiful!!

Giggs United's most threatening player? Were you watching the same game?
