The kid can't be human, can he? The trickery of George Best, the technique of Zinédine Zidane, the workrate of Bryan Robson, the heading ability of Nat Lofthouse. Then there's the speed, the free kicks ... Cristiano Ronaldo must be an android.
His goal against AS Roma on Tuesday was astounding. He showed an old-fashioned centre forward's instincts to run across the defender and attack the ball, bravely not worrying about getting hurt and damaging those good looks. Never mind the spectacular free kicks and back-heels. This goal impressed me more than anything because it makes me wonder - is there anything Ronaldo can't do?
Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi would never score a goal such as that. Even Diego Maradona couldn't. All the great technical players over the years were not as complete in front of goal as Ronaldo. He is a penalty-box predator as well as a winger - a creator and a finisher from all angles in all areas. And aged only 23, he's getting better. He may not peak for another four or five years, but already he's the best player in the world. By a mile.
The Portuguese has progressed hugely from the naive teenager who frustrated fans and team-mates. Now he sees and does things early. Ronaldo's instincts have fine-tuned as he matures and he is surrounded by exciting young talent who complement him and a manager who has instilled a strong work ethic and allowed his individuality to flourish.
Ronaldo is tall, strong, cool in front of goal and always looks to get in the box when the ball is on the other flank rather than linger out wide as many wingers do. He is a self-assured showman in the mode of Eric Cantona, who never worked as hard. Thierry Henry has comparable ability but does not have the fire in his belly that Ronaldo does. His achievements are giving him confidence that in turn inspires him to do more and more. Ronaldo the robot is a perfect example for other players - not that they would be able to replicate his achievements, not if they're mere mortals.

Man U looks really strong. I agree that Ronaldo is the best in the world now that he is maturing.

Richard, have you been watching the boy lately? I fully agree with the article. One only had to watch him as he lost the ball the other night against Roma. Whereas before he would have had a sulk and blame all but the Gods for him losing the ball, now he tracks back and fights for posession. And this is becoming a very familiar trait of his.
Believe the hype.
Rowan, Sydney, Australia
Maradona, Pele, Best - players I only know in black and white or grainy VHS - I can only hope I am on the verge of witnessing something truly special.
(Zidane of course was in brilliant DVD quality)
Stan, London,
Ronaldo needs a rival genius to compete against preferably in the premier league. That's the only thing that could conceivably keep that fire in the belly burning bright.
Rezwan, Manchester,
"Work rate of Brian Robson" ????? Tony I'm a massive United fan and season ticket holder. I agree in alot of what your saying, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Ronaldo was played at centre forward against Roma last night and for one reason, his lack of workrate and tendency to let people run off him and not track them. Where we come from we call that "cheating".
All the other attributes I will wear, but saying is comparable to Robbo in terms of perspiration without the ball is way of the mark.
