I’ve travelled to France, Italy and Portugal in recent weeks and every taxi driver said the same thing: Manchester United are the best team in Europe. This tie is an opportunity for United to prove it, because a convincing win over Barcelona would be an impressive statement.
It should happen — for me, United are firm favourites. This season the reality has not lived up to the reputation for Barcelona. Well behind in the Spanish League, they have had serious problems on the pitch and off it, with speculation about the future of Frank Rijkaard, the coach.
The argument goes that a team with so much flair, the Harlem Globetrotters of football, can always pull out a performance. But I haven’t seen one this season.
Ronaldinho is injured. Lionel Messi is just back from injury and Patrice Evra is quick enough to cope with him. They are vulnerable at the back and Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o are not the players they were 18 months ago.
There is no reason for United to be afraid because they can equal the Catalan giants’ flair and have superior workrate and athleticism. The Barcelona players can be lazy and spend too much time admiring each other, and when things are going badly they are not convincing. With suspect temperament, if United go for them, they could be exposed. They’ve not got the belly for a fight.
They aren’t good at defending set-pieces — so play two strikers and get in attacking areas to win dangerous free kicks. Ferguson will probably just go with Wayne Rooney up front but I’d like to see Carlos Tévez there, too, most likely at the expense of Paul Scholes. Tévez and Rooney can pick holes in the defence.
In midfield, Michael Carrick is better at retaining the ball than Scholes and Owen Hargreaves can put in a busy shift intercepting the little passing interchanges that Barcelona love. If he plays at right back, Wes Brown needs to be wary of Henry’s pace and not stick too tightly to him.
As for Cristiano Ronaldo: the accusation that he doesn’t perform in big games is unfair since he was outstanding for Portugal in the 2006 World Cup finals. The second leg is more likely to be his moment. This tie is a chance for him, like United, to confirm what we all think: he’s the best on the Continent.

I see now all chances of success on the field have evaporated, again, Arsenal fans are moving their targets to articles about United. Makes sense really, at least it gives them something to do. Ask Roma if they think Carrick is "average", and ask Real Madrid if they've ever been turned inside out the way they were by Roma, home and away. And here's a little project for you while the rest of us are supporting teams with a chance of winning something, have a look on the internet and see how United have done against Roma in the last 12 months.
Chris, Worthing, England
SS of London: Roma has been far better than Milan at home this season, and are currently about ten points ahead of Milan in the league.
As for the "played off the park"-statement: United had two legimate goals, Tevez went agonisingly close and Lehmann had three excellent saves (though one eventually ended in a goal for Hargreaves) from Rooney. Arsenal only "scored" from a handball. I can accept being "outclassed" as long as we score two more than the opposition.
Regarding Real Madrid: They have lost nine times in 2008, so to say they would have beaten United, well if you don't look at facts, it may sound like a reasonable statement.
I hope we don't play both Scholes and Giggs as they're off form. If fit, and given SAF prefers 4-5-1 in tough away matches, I'd go for Scholes and Carrick, and one from Anderson/Hargreaves in the middle, the other one on the flank. Anderson on the left, Hargreaves on the right, Ronaldo on the other flank and Rooney up front. Should give Barca a fight.....
Andy, Bergen, Norway
I think that Anderson must start at the expense of (I hate to say it, but the writings on the all) Scholes tomorrow if fit. Having said that, I think that Scholes could be afforded enough space against Barca to be effective - its been in frenetic games such as Arsenal/Blackburn that his fading sharpness has been shown.
I also would like to see Tevez start but Ferguson has used him brilliantly this season as a second half sub in tight away games. His introduction swings the last quarter of a game completely in United's favour and it has worked on numerous occasions (most notably against Lyons away).
I think, however, that ferguson will play a 5 man midfield with Scholes, Carrick Hargreaves/Anderson, Giggs and Ronaldo to see through the tricky first half. Tevez , Nani and Anderson/Hargreaves as tide-turning subs.

Oh yes, Smith the smug gunner, Arsenal are technically superior to everyone in Europe! With great touch players such as Senderos, Toure, Gallas, Flamini, Adebayor, Eboue etc, the donkeys like Rooney, Tevez, Evra, Ferdinand, Scholes, Ronaldo, Carrick, Anderson etc. simply do not compare. As a neutral, I would much rather watch United's fast, skilful and purposeful football that Arsenal's pretty but often ineffective game. I am quite sure that many teams, Man United included, could play the Arsenal way if they so desired and just as well but they prefer a more incisive game and one that delivers trophies.
Phil Daniels, Newcastle,
united are lucky roma beat real, s.s.? what utter tripe. it would be more accurate to say that domestically real are lucky that barcelona are a hopeless shambles.
typical gooner mentality to think that arsenal would still be on for the double if not for the injustice of the world. of course, if united hadn't been missing pretty much their entire defence last year, they would have beaten milan over two legs without conceding a goal. as for arsenal outplaying united, rooney had as many chances as adebayor, but if you don't take your chances, you risk giving away stupid free kicks/penalties.
tony, united have been the best team in europe before and not won. it's just a cup competition and it generally favours teams who are not focused on winning their domestic leagues. some teams are good enough to fight on several fronts, but it takes luck (of the sort united had in abdundance in 1999).
win or lose, united are the best team in europe. yup, even better than arsenal. :0)
jem, london, uk
This is a weak Europe this year, and Utd have been lucky that Roma beat Madrid who would have turned them over.
Barcelona are weak at the back, but if their midfield gets a grip of the game it's all over. Carrick is a good EPL player, but average on the big stage, ditto Scholes and Giggs.
Arsenal played them off the park last week, and beat Milan away, something Utd couldn't do. They are a better side technically, and if not for a couple of penalties would still be there. Chelsea are still the hardest side to beat. Utd fall between the two.
