Sir Alex Ferguson says Wayne Rooney remains a major doubt for the match against Wigan Athletic on Sunday, although the Manchester United manager remains confident his striker will recover from a hip injury in time for the Champions League final on May 21.

Rooney has missed United's past two games, including the victory over Barcelona, after suffering a recurrence of the injury in the defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last month.

"I am not so sure about Wayne," Ferguson said. "Maybe I will have him as a substitute on Sunday, but he will certainly be fit for the Champions League final."

United expect Nemanja Vidic to be available. The defender suffered concussion and a cut lip at Stamford Bridge after an accidental collision with Didier Drogba. The tough-tackling Serbian has been cleared by the United medics to face Steve Bruce's men providing he comes through the remaining training sessions unscathed.

"We are very hopeful of Nemanja being fit," Ferguson said. "He is clear medically, so the next two training sessions will be very important. But he is much better and hopefully I can get him right for Sunday."
