Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United would be worthy winners of the Champions League because of their proud record in the competition this season.
The England striker points to the team's unbeaten run as to proof they are the best in Europe. Rooney's theory will be put to the test in Moscow a week on Wednesday when Chelsea provide the opposition in the competition's first all-English final. United will approach the clash with confidence after clinching the Barclays Premier League title following yesterday's 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic. With Barcelona and Roma among their victims in the Champions League, Rooney cannot wait for the final.
He said: "Winning the Champions League would be a great achievement, unbelievable. It is a very difficult trophy to win but we are the only unbeaten team in the competition. That record speaks for itself and we have played some great football in Europe this season.
"Some people said we did not express ourselves enough against Barcelona but we knew we had a job to do and we got to the final. We want to go there and win it as well as the league. I feel we can do it."
Rooney paid tribute to Ryan Giggs and cited the Welsh winger as a shining example to all young players. Giggs marked a record-equalling 758th appearance for United by scoring the crucial second goal at Wigan. Cristiano Ronaldo had made the breakthrough from the penalty spot to take his tally for the season to a remarkable 41.
Rooney said: "It's an unbelievable achievement by Giggsy and a perfect moment for him to score. I don't think anyone will ever win 10 titles like he has done. He deserves it. Today, more players move around clubs but Giggsy has shown his commitment and loyalty to Manchester United. He is a great example for all young players."
Meanwhile, David Gill, the Manchester United chief executive, has promised Sir Alex Ferguson more funds to strengthen his title-winning squad this summer.
Ferguson went on a major spending spree 12 months ago, bringing in Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and Nani within weeks of the Premier League being won and Gill has already promised Ferguson cash will be available this summer should the Scot push through plans to make his group of players even more formidable next term as he looks to equal Liverpool's record haul of 18 league titles.
"Like any club you assess what's gone well, what hasn't gone so well and where you feel you can improve," Gill said. "We will certainly be in a position where, if we can improve it, we will. Alex will never allow us to rest on our laurels. It is the best league in the world without doubt so if we want to continue to be at the top we have to make sure we look at the squad and improve it."
A £7million bid for Michael Owen has already been rumoured and while Ferguson is unlikely to be drawn on such a move, it seems changes are likely in the striking department with Louis Saha's time at Old Trafford seemingly drawing to a close.
Mikael Silvestre is another first-team squad man who may decide to move on, although Ferguson would be loathe to lose John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher and Gerard Pique, who all realise they could play more regularly elsewhere.
"The team won the title last year so how do you improve on that?" Gill added. "But that is what we try to do. We need to make sure we don't stand still and our ability to identify those players who will make that difference has been very well sorted out the last two or three years."
