Sir Alex Ferguson has been named Manager of the Year by the League Managers Association (LMA) for leading Manchester United to a tenth Premier League title and next week’s Champions League final.
The award is voted for by the LMA membership and takes into consideration the performance of all managers over the season based upon all the resources available to them. Ferguson won the Premier League's equivalent award.
Fabio Capello, England head coach and LMA president, presented awards to the winnners of each of English football's top divisions.
Ferguson, who won the main award in 1999, succeeds the Reading manager Steve Coppell, winner in the past two seasons. “It is a tremendous honour that my fellow managers and LMA members should deem me worthy of this award," Ferguson said. "I am very proud to receive it.”
Tony Mowbray was named the Coca-Cola Championship manager of the year for leading West Bromwich Albion to the title. Roberto Martinez, the Swansea City manager, won the League One award for the same achievement in his league, while Graham Turner was given the League Two award for leading Hereford Town to automatic promotion in their first season back in the Football League.
Howard Wilkinson, the LMA chairman, said: “Recognition by your peers is an incredible privilege and this year’s winners should be proud of their achievements. The LMA would like to congratulate all the managers for playing such an integral role in another fantastic season.”
