Matt Hughes
We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times
Formation: 4-4-2
Average rating: 6.7
Edwin van der Sar 7
Slipped to allow Lampard to equalise but more than made amends in the
shoot-out, saving from Anelka to win the Champions League for United 13
years after he did so at Ajax.
Wes Brown 7
An unsung hero for much of the season but seized the limelight when it
mattered, exchanging neat passes with Scholes before playing a fine
left-foot cross for Ronaldo to open the scoring.
Rio Ferdinand 7
Succeeded in keeping Drogba relatively quiet thanks to his aerial prowess but
culpable for Chelsea’s equaliser, with his poor clearance coming straight
back at him and Lampard taking advantage.
Nemanja Vidic 7
Unable to train on the eve of the match but was at full strength last night
as he made several crucial contributions, clearing a dangerous ball from
Essien and heading a cross by Lampard behind goal.
Patrice Evra 7
Showed his attacking intent by overlapping with Ronaldo and repeatedly
getting to the byline to emphasise his status as Europe’s premier left back,
even if he cannot get in the France team.
Owen Hargreaves 7
Surprisingly shoved out to the right of a four-man midfield but appeared
unperturbed at playing in an unfamiliar role, getting forward at every
opportunity and putting in several good crosses.
Michael Carrick 6
More than held his own in a fascinating midfield battle with Lampard, though
second best in the finishing stakes, shooting straight at Cech when he had
time to take a touch and place his shot.
Paul Scholes 6
Unable to tackle at the age of 33, as he showed with a clumsy foul on
Makelele, for which he was booked, but made amends with brilliant interplay
with Brown that created United’s goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo 8
Answered doubts about his appetite for the big occasion in normal time, giving
Essien a torrid time and scoring with his head, but many would say he paid
the price for arrogance with missed penalty.
Wayne Rooney 6
Enjoyed his rare outing playing through the middle in this competition,
dovetailing with Tévez in what must be the hardest-working front two in
Europe and making his presence felt.
Carlos Tévez 6
Worked tirelessly but will be remembered for the chances he missed that could
have given United a three-goal lead, heading straight at Cech and then
scuffing a shot from Rooney’s cross.
Substitutions: Ryan Giggs (for Scholes, 87min) 5, Nani (for Rooney, 102), Anderson (for Brown, 120). Not used: Tomasz Kuszczak, John O’Shea, Darren Fletcher, Mikaël Silvestre.
Booked: Scholes, Ferdinand, Vidic, Tévez.

6 for Tevez, come on! He puts the balls!
German Pippi, patagones, argentina
makes me laugh aswell he is no doubt the best player in the world but vidic was immence 4 us last nyt and was my vote for man of the match if ronaldo goes this year he will be hated so much it wud be a great loss to the premiership and to manchester utd but if he wants 2 leave they should allow it
marcus locke (man utd fan), Soham, Cambs
why do the media continually seek to rewrite the story of the game around the individuals that they are predecided will be the match winners (i.e. Ronaldo)! There is no way that Ronaldo was mom last night, it was a good header for the goal but others played better (Man Utd fan)
mark, UK,
How does Ronaldo get an 8? He was directly culpable for Chelseas goal - leaving Essien unmarked to shoot.
He was also AWOL for almost the entire second half. Ronaldo is a fantastic league player, but is too easily marked out of the game as all the top teams have shown ont he big stages.
Dom, London,
i think that ronaldo had to be rated more than 8 he is world class the best player in the world but who cares we are the champions of europe come on the boys
nic, maryport, england
Were you watching the game? Torrid time? For half an hour, yes. For the other 90 mins Ronaldo was away with the fairies. And in the shoot out he proved himself to be one of them. I can't wait for him to leave so journalists can stop drooling over a player who has never produced in big games.
Mike, Bristol,
obviusly Ferdinand was captain he felt the match. Ronaldo is better then last year but he have to grow up further.
Michele, Belmonte Piceno, Italia
Van der Sar also beat Ronaldo on the penalty kick by not committing and not moving until Ronaldo actually kicked the ball.
Brilliant and intelligent and brave goaltending.
nicholas, kelowna BC, canada
THe back four were inspirational. Tevez worked his socks off chasing down the ball and deserves a higher rating than given here! Ronaldo wasnt in top form and I would give him 6.
Matt, Napoli, Italy
got to agree with sean, vidic was a rock
david , monk fryston,
Edwin Van Der Sar was incredible! He saved the penalty of Anelka and also he played fairly well during the match. In my opinion was the best. Man of the Match!
Davide, Roma/Reading, Italy/Uk
7/10 for Vidic? Was the reviewer at the match? He, like Ronaldo, was immense.
Sean, Manchester,
Thought we could have held on to the balla bit more in the second half but what can i say a win definatly deserved! Plus Giggsy what a hero!
Will F, Cardiff,
Vidic was simply immense. Ronaldo was always a threat in possession but negligent on defence - guess that's the price you pay for brilliance! Thought Scholesy played well in the 1st half, neat linking play with the forwards and it carved Chelski up a few times.
Great game. Bit sad for JT though
Jonathan Main, Kuwait City, Kuwait
I concur. Vidic was outstanding. While Ronaldo seemed to come in and out of the game a little too much for me - Wes Brown was also much better than Ferdinand who seemed to be the United player most affected by the big stage!
duncan, Wokingham,
Exactly. Read the Man Utd forums, Vidic was MOTM by a country mile, he didn't put a foot wrong! Against Drogba! Carrick also didn't miss a pass today and drove United's midfield when Scholes looked out of it.
Who cares anyway, CHAMPIONS!
AL, Cardiff,
I'm surprised The Times have given Ronaldo and Lampard a higher rating than Vidic,I thought he was the MOTM by a mile and would've given him a 9 myself.
