With the European Cup back under lock and key at Old Trafford, Manchester United are preparing for a battle to keep their trophy player from the clutches of Real Madrid. Even in his finest hour, Cristiano Ronaldo was alarmingly evasive about his future, strengthening the belief that he will push for a move to Spain unless United agree to make him the best-paid player in the world.
Moments after his team had emerged triumphant from a nerve-shredding penalty shoot-out against Chelsea on Wednesday night, a breathless Ronaldo told an on-pitch reporter that “I want to stay” at United. But, swaggering out of the Luzhniki Stadium 90 minutes later, proudly wearing his Champions League winner’s medal around his neck, he said that he could not make any promises about his future and repeated that a decision will be made in the next two weeks.
Sources have indicated that Ronaldo and Jorge Mendes, his agent, will push for a significant increase on the £120,000-a-week contract he signed only 13 months ago, citing the willingness of Real, either this summer or next, to pay him more than £150,000 a week, in addition to approving a world-record transfer fee in excess of £50 million.
Mendes is reported to have held discussions with Predrag Mijatovic, the Real sporting director, in Moscow on Tuesday and, even though David Gill, the United chief executive, again tried to dismiss fears of losing Ronaldo yesterday, the club are likely to be unnerved by some of the winger’s post-match comments.
Asked whether he could assure United supporters that he would stay next season, Ronaldo said: “I never promise nothing. I don’t promise nothing to my mum. I don’t promise nothing to the supporters. I want to stay, I want to stay, but the future no one knows.”
Asked whether this meant that his future would hinge on discussing a new contract, he said: “I don’t know nothing. No one speaks with me. Two weeks. Not this week. I will know the following week. I don’t say I will make a decision. I say the club make a decision.”
If the ball is in United’s court, Ronaldo will see out the remaining four years of his contract, but Ramón Calderón, the Real president, demonstrated his growing optimism by suggesting that the 23-year-old would be able to engineer a move to Spain if, as they believe, that is what he desires.
“The players play where they want,” Calderón said. “If a player decides to leave, he is unstoppable. Slavery was abolished a long time ago. I have always said that if Manchester want to sell him, we will ask about him and if he wants to come, we can pay what they ask.”
Bernd Schuster, the Real coach, believes that Ronaldo will play for the Spanish champions at some point in his career. “Sooner or later, Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the white shirt,” he said. “I hope that it is when I am still at the club.”
According to Marca, the Spanish sports daily, Ronaldo said that his future “will be known next week and everyone will be happy”. It would appear that United cannot take his long-term future for granted.

Am a United fan not ronaldo fan,if he wants to go let him go....
but he did say he is gonna stay with united sooooooooooo.....what's going on......................
kovac, bedford, u.k
Real Madrid have put aside 80 million euros for wages and transfer fee for Ronaldo. This might be a "real"istic bid but it's certainly not a realistic bid based on his true worth to either club.
Don't forget that any transfer fee from a European club is paid in instalments over a number of years
Martin Griffiths, Manchester, UK
Simon,
what does it matter if someone supports a club if they live in a different country.Living in australia, most of us are quite passionate about their EPL teams. but unfortunatly some have never been to see their side play. doesnt mean they cant support. sigh. annother closed minded man u fan
Daniele, Melbourne, Australia
C.Ronaldo should move, if he truely wants to play for a great club with class. Sure he can win in England, but to be a great for Real Madrid would be more of an achievement.
Nasser Hussain, Liverpool, UK
Its true that when you become a star, you will always feel like fiting everywhere,/accepting all the biggest money offer, but always the contruary to players who change their club for the pride of being a star, thinking they will keep on being a star make them instead become no star. Henry, shevchen
fal, Kampala, Uganda
Some people on here need to support a team in their own country. United don't need glory supporters. As a United fan, I want Ronaldo to stay but if he wants to go we shouldn't force him to stay. Although, if he did go, I doubt the new star would be Rooney. I find him over rated and nothing special.
Simon, Manchester,
If Ronaldo wants to go to Madrid let him. Or better still sell him to Barcelona for 20 million. As soon as united get rid of him the better then we wont have to put up with all this talk about Madrid . Great player he may be but he is not bigger than the club.
Richard, melbourne,
What goes around comes around.David Beckham was always 100%loyal toUnited whereas Ronaldo is 100% loyal to Ronaldo!
Ria Cocking, Plymouth, England
A Syed, London, England
Your comments are very true for a Chelsea fan.
This is the reason Real Madrid are not in the market for Drogba.
Malcolm, Liverpool, England
Go Ronaldo Go: But You Wll Never Have it in Spain What you Are Having Here in United. You Have my Words !
Hashaam, Lahore, Pakistan
£50mm is £18mm/season (including wages based on 4 year remaining contract). Aside from his massive impact on the pitch, he is also a big contributor to Man U merchandise and sales revenues (his contribution probably £20mm/season alone). His value is £35mm/season min, his transfer fee should be £120mm
AC, london, UK
Nothing new here,Real Madrid up to their old tricks,if i were Fergie and he was adamant he wanted to leave then i would sell him to Barcelona as they are a properly run club and it would absolutely gut Madrid.
marco, gloucester,
Let him go. We'd be spared the endless step-overs that don't fool any player above League one level. He is a brilliant player, but his arrogance is insufferable. People seem to have forgotten how he got Rooney sent off for England against Portugal. I can still remember the smug look on his face.
Howard, London,
Depends on whether you want to play for a club with a great history but less of a future, or a club with less history but a great future. Whether you want to celebrate history or make it. I know which I'd choose.
Dan X, Cardiff, Wales
not knowing a huge amount about transfers etc but it seems to me that Real are always tryin to poach big players from other clubs to get their so called "pedigre". I know man u also does this sometimes but i also know ferguson often buys unkowns and trains them to become man u legends.any thoughts?
phil, london,
Interested by Calderon's comments about slavery. Presumably, and I was never very good at history, the Spanish Empire paid its slaves 80-100 thousand pounds a year. In Spain that might constitute slavery, but, perhaps I am being naive, that sum should secure an element of loyalty towards employers?
Andy, London,
This is rubbish, he's not leaving.
he'll sign a new contract next week. he's still got something like 3 years to run.
im disappointed with the journalism regarding this. its sensationalism nothing more
Adam, Manchester,
Real Madrid don't need a diving cheat who bottles at the big stage - missed pens in both CL SF & Final - was nowhere in the SF both legs this year and last - and also had a rubbish game in FA Cup Final last year. I'm sure RM doesn't want to match their rivals in Spain in buying diving cheats...
A Syed, London, England
Over the last 15 years, players who have left United have not been too successful. Beckham & Van Nistlerooy won La Liga with Real Madrid but they would rather have stayed at United. Ronaldo should be careful what he wishes for. He should show loyalty to the club who have made him.
Paul, West Midlands,
if he wants it, let him have it,if he is playing for money alone then he's not a united player anyway, bye bye
dennis david, fethiye, turkey
If the lads that desperate to leave, then so be it. If we get in the region of £75 million SAF will have a field day bringing in new quality to replace him and bolster the squad.
Paul, Buxton,
a move to real Madird at this stage in his career would be a backwards step. Man utd r the champoins of europe and England. Real Madird have tried to buy succ ess of the past 10 years and failed miserably. They have been living off their past glories for a long time. The Spainish league is mediocree
p c, manchester, england
Cheerio Cheerio, Taxi for Ronaldo. Watch he doesn't trip.
Spain will suit the diver better - they appreciate that.
Scott, London,
i wonder if he'd be so sure of himself if John Terry had put that penalty away?
valroy, london,
Does Ronaldo perform on the big stage? What does that actually mean? Well lets see, he's been Portugal's best player at both of the last 2 major championships and in the team of the championship at both. Hm doesn't do it on the big stage. They said the same before the Roma game, think he's proved it
matt, london,
Take the money, he over confident and arrogant not like United players very similar to Beckham. Yes he is the best in the world but if they want to fork out 100 mill good luck to United,I believe in two years Nani can be the same player that Ronaldo is.
Go Red don't let a player hold us to ransom
steve, Melbourne, Australia
So how judge the best in Europe? Domestic league success? So which is the best league?
Whichever barometer you use this year..there is only one team who make any valid claim to being the best.Thirty years ago, I would agree, Mr Roberts, the EC was pure knockout. Now it isn't.
John Pownall, Bridport,
It is fool if RM bought him. It will break the balance of the team!
Ren, Liaoning, China
It's almost silly to criticise him ,after scoring the opening goal, but can anyone honestly say that Ronaldo produces on the big stage, i.e. Portugal or Man Utd in Europe. It's fine to terrorise Wigan or Bolton but he singularly disappoints again and again and again in the "big ones"
Hugh Cairns, Huntingdon, UK
No player costs the money that is being said. If Real is fool enough to pay that money, ManUtd will be the only winner. Ronaldo will never play in Real to the expected standard (though Real will recover the money paid from marketing revenue) and ManUtd will find a replacement next season.
Ruben, Madrid,
all said and done could ronaldo be the player he is without his teamates? Evra makes him forget his defensive duties. if Brown had not made that perfect cross wud he have scored? and ultimately who scored the goal that took man utd to the finals? and who was ronaldo b4 he came to man utd?
marvin, windhoek, namibia
Why is so much emphasis placed on the 'greatness' of the European Cup. Its a knockout tournament, it proves absolutely nothing about the greatness of a team. Winning the FA cup doesn't make you the best team in England, so why should winning the European FA cup make you the best team in Europe?
J Roberts, Manchester, UK
Would it be too much to expect a player to show loyalty to a club that has made him what he is today. 120,000 a week as wages and you still want more, how greedy can agent's and players get. Edward's got it spot on, let's make wages totally performance related.
Usama, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
As a Madrid fan, please keep him. We already had one overrated Manchester player come over. Though it is only natural that everyone wants to play at Madrid and I wouldn't be surprised that given Manchester's £800 million debt they would want to cash in.
Diego, London,
No player is bigger than the club....
Simon, Manchester ,
am I the only one to see this is a players move to get a pay rise at Manchester??
to everyone ditching Real Madrid, well everything has been said, we have won just as many Champions league in 5 years (98-2003) as Manchester united won in their whole history.
jorge , madrid, spain
Looks like a negotiating ploy to me. Apart from that, does anybody truly believe that Real can finance a 100 million euro move, plus 10 million a year wages. Look at recent European transfers and you will see the levels paid by Spanish and Italian clubs have dropped considerably recently.
jonners, weybridge,
If Utd's success can be singularly attributed to one individual, it is to Ferguson. His judgement on the external vs Old Trafford value of his players will prevail. Sir Alex is a courageous, intelligent and loyal team builder, yet nobody's fool. I will trust his footballing decisions every time.
Mike L, Chippenham, Wilts. (Bristol City)
Claire's got it spot on , let him go to Spain , Utd get 60m and the Roonster plays in his best position which is a win , win for England as well .
If Ronny were to get £150,000 ? week that would save us 7.8m a year.
No brainer.
Nick Dixon, Sutton Coldfield, England
People were up in arms when beckam left saying what would happen to United but they still came through. Manchester is not a one man team there is plenty of talent to replace him if he stays or goes does'nt make much difference to me.
Dallyn, Discovery, South Africa
if Ronaldo leaves for real madrid he may suffer the same fate as david beckham and van nilsteroy: they never competed or played wtih the same passion as when they played with united. They under achieved and the rest is history. The grass is not always greener on the other side.
RT, London, Canada
Cash in and let the show pony move on to Madrid. No doubt he'll fail there anyway, it's a badly run club by anyones standards.
Mel, Manchester,
Real - pretenders to throne *biggest club in the world??!! - pah!* you have the cheek? Utd is richest in the world and now european champs - madrid may have pedigree but that's past - we are talking abt now - it may take some time yet for madrid to "rediscover" pedigree - so Ron can judge 4 himself
James, leicester,
Well, lets face it - any player's loyalty cant be forced. It does looks like, I stressed, from the newspaper reports, that Ron dont seem to be a loyal servant, to the club. His head is only muddly enmeshed in ego and $$$. But lets be fair, and judge him again in 2 weeks time as he puts it.
Terence, Singapore, Singapore
Calderon's comparison between a 23 year footballer who is holding out for 150,000 GBP a week and Slaves who were deprived of their personal freedom and forced to work for nothing is brilliant!!
If Ronaldo wants to go then let him. We want players at Utd who love the club rather than themselves...
Nick , Sydney , Australia
And here's the reason I despise footballers
nick, South Woodford,
Well, United should not be at any time be held ransom by anyone - manager or player. And at any time, no player should dictate the club do at his whim and fancy.
This applies to any club or any commercial employer-employee working relationship. Both form a partnership by mutual win-win consent.
Terence, Singapore, Singapore
To Gonzalo...
Ronald would be nothing other than a show pony if he'd left Sporting for Madrid. Ferguson and the Man U staff turned him into the player he is today.
This has nothing to do with marketing although it' s clear that all you and Real see is how much revenue the player will generate.
Simon, Sydney, Australia
Ronaldo,
Please go to Madrid and take the ego with you.
You are playing a dangerous game with SAF and there will only ever be one winner....and guess who that will be?
Tomorrows forgotten man just like Mourinho
Jocky Macdougal, Manchester, UK
Clare: agreed. Ronaldo is not indispensable. Get a good centre forward, and a good winger -- Diego Capel of Seville would be my choice for the latter -- and Ronaldo will be forgotten withing twelve months.
Mike M., boston,
He's going.
To the biggest club in the world. Utd have nothing on Madrid's European pedigree, and another lucky win in the CL proves it. He knows it's going to be another 10 years before Utd get lucky again. Madrid are simply better.
Need to pay off that 3/4 Billion debt too!
G.Brown, London,
i think if ronaldo moves in madrid it will be better for his futur
he will be very happy in madrid and he will win lot's of medals
every player's dream is to play for madrid .So i think ronaldo moving in madrid will be a big move for him and the club.
guy, stanford, new york
Ronaldo have done much more to M. Utd. than Utd to Ronaldo.Don´t forget that M. Utd. have earned much money by Ronaldo Marketing since Ronaldo is the most profitable player in the world.Don´t forget either that this is the principal reason of the battle between Utd and Real. Remember Beckham.
Gonzalo, Madrid, Spain
Didn't another player in a number 7 shirt leave for Spain? I don't remmeber too many positive moments in their stint at Real. I think Ronaldo deserves to be the best player in the world, but he should stay at United. He will be an all-time great if he does. Alex will keep his feet on the ground.
Mr Smith, Bristol,
I rather that Ronaldo leave than holding the club to ransom. Rooney is the bigger star and he'll shine even brighter if Ronaldo leave, in my opinion...
BH, Eunos, Singapore
people dont understand that ronaldo is responding to spanish reporters when asked [ would you like to play in spain] he has to respond politely and say yes he does not want to respond as if he is above playing in spain and he does not want to burn his bridges either .
al martins, stoneham , ma
Ronaldo rarely joins goal celebrations that aren't his own. After the final spoke mainly about his own game. Self-absorbed and without a shred of loyalty he may think he deserves another pay rise, yet would his wages dip correspondingly if he lost form and contributed little? Exactly. Get rid I say.
Edward, Lincoln, England
It would be disappointing to see him instigate a move when Utd have given him everything. But from someone so arrogant & prone to cheating, it wouldn't be surprising. Utd will survive - Rooney could finally play in his best position every game. I wont lose any sleep over thoughts of him going.
Claire, Dublin,
