Manchester United are seeking to emulate Bayern Munich's policy of involving successful former players in the running of the German club and have revealed how they expect Ryan Giggs to follow in the footsteps of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by becoming a coach at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer joined the backroom staff at United after retiring in August last year because of a long-term knee injury and will assume responsibility for managing the reserve team in conjunction with Warren Joyce, who has been coaching Royal Antwerp, the Barclays Premier League champions feeder club, for the past 18 months.
With Bryan Robson, the former United midfield player, appointed as a club ambassador in March, Brian McClair, a former striker, the academy director, and Sir Bobby Charlton a director, Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, wants Giggs, left, to become the next old boy to stay at the club after he has stopped playing.
“We want a structure whereby former players are part of the club, like we are doing with Bryan Robson,” the United manager said. “The model of that is, without question, Bayern Munich and I have been saying for years to our people that our former players who have been a great credit to the club should always be included in the future, like we have done with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this year.”
