Real Madrid have attempted to placate Manchester United in the row over the Spanish club's pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ramon Calderon, the Real president, said that the Spanish champions did not want "to enter into conflict" and would not make an approach as long as United did not want to sell.
"We're not going to do anything against the wishes of a friend like Manchester," Calderon said. "We're sorry that Manchester are unhappy, but Real have nothing to do with this affair.
"We know Manchester are not selling, so why would we persist? It's a problem between the player and the club."
United had threatened to report Real to Fifa over their interest in the Portugal winger, having heard Bernd Schuster, the Real coach, call Ronaldo his principal summer transfer target and reports claiming the Spanish club were preparing an £80 million bid.
"We have watched with growing irritation the comments attributed to Real Madrid over their alleged desire to sign Cristiano," a Manchester United statement read. "We will have no alternative but to report Real if it continues to behave in this totally unacceptable fashion."
Ronaldo is under contract with the Champions League winners until 2012, but fuelled speculation earlier this week by refusing to rule out a move. "What the press speculate about goes over my head," he said. "I have been used to it for the past two years.
"I am calm. Everything's clear and I will repeat it once again so that the whole world understands: there will be news in two or three weeks. At the moment I am here, I am going to give my best and do the best possible in the European Championships."
