Listen to Gary Mabbutt talking about his friend Paul Gascoigne on BBC Radio Five Live: parts one and two
Sir Alex Ferguson says his biggest regret was not being able to persuade Paul Gascoigne to join Manchester United.
Ferguson may have won ten Premier League titles and two European Cups during his time at Old Trafford, but his failure to sign the England international still rankles.
Gascoigne was sectioned under the Mental Health Act for the second time in five months yesterday and In the wake of the player's latest personal crisis Ferguson says he believed he could have helped the troubled star and instilled some discipline into him.
"Alan Shearer is one I wish I'd signed, but for me the most disappointing of all was Paul Gascoigne," Ferguson said. "He was the best player of his era, a breath of fresh air because he played with a smile.
"Around 1987, when Newcastle were bobbing above the relegation zone, we played them and my three central midfielders that day were Bryan Robson, Norman Whiteside and Remi Moses. All great footballers and he just tore them apart.
"Robbo and Whiteside were chasing him up and down the pitch and they couldn't get near him.
"We spoke to him the night before I went on holiday. He says 'Go and enjoy yourself Mr Ferguson, I'll be signing for Manchester United'.
"So I went on my holidays but Martin Edwards [then chairman] rang and said 'I've got some bad news - he signed for Tottenham. They bought a house for his mother and father in the North East and that swung it'.
"I think it was a bad mistake, and Paul admits it. We had Bryan Robson, a Geordie, Steve Bruce, a Geordie, Gary Pallister, from Middlesbrough... We had a structure of players who could have helped him and it could have given him some discipline."

What Ferguson would have given Gazza was discipline. At his age with his personality, going down to London was a bad move. Gazza is simply the most tragic story and he joins a long list of players who I wish had played for Utd.
harry, manchester, uk
I think is all incredibly insensitive. SAF and people talking this way would suggest Gazza is now either dead or beyond help. He needs help NOW, not when he was a player. Its clear Gazza has more than a drinking problem, he's a manic depressent&Fergie does not have these powers to cure as may think
David, Cardiff,
My point regarding George Best was not a reference to Alex Ferguson and his player management skills, although it should be said that I doubt that they are geater than those of Matt Busby.
It was a sad reflectiuon that the truly gifted often cannot cope with the baggage that accompanies stardom.
Steve Cantle, London, UK
I am not a Man Utd supporter but I remember George Best when he first started to play for them and watched him all through his all too brief career. He took Man Utd to another plane and they are still there. He was a unique talent and oh so good looking, as beautiful as the beautiful game.
Alison Oswald, Fareham, Hampshire
Well lets wish Gazza well at this time in his life.
I wouldnt expect there to be a single person in the country who would not want to see him get his problems under management and to make a recovery.
We love you Gazza.
James, London,
I tend to think that SAF could have helped Gazza, as he has tended to deal with some players with different personality issues who have thrived under him. Ince, Cantona, Keane, Rio, etc. These guys haven't been angels by any means, but SAF's influence has helped them all attain great heights.
Raza Ali, Los Angeles, USA
Good point Steve, because Ferguson was manager of Man Utd in the 1960s.
Martin, Liverpool,
Sir alex wasnt manger when Best was playing at Man U duh brain..
Indy, Hornchurch, UK
Does Sir Alex think he would have saved Paul Gascoigne by treating him the way he treated Ruud van, Jaap Stam or how he ended up treating David Beckam or Roy Keane. Sir Alex is a very successful manager but he is no angelof mercy.
Larry Norris, East London, South Africa
Indeed and what a pity George Best didn't sign for Tottenham.
They would have saved him......
Steve Cantle, London, UK
What could have been.
Importantly he wouldn't have damaged his knee in the FA Cup final for Tottenham, which marked the beginning of the end.
It hurts Fergie, it must kill Gazza.
