Real Madrid have conceded that it will be “impossible” to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer unless he demands a move, something that they still hope he may be prepared to do. Even in retreat, however, their president could not resist antagonising Manchester United yesterday, mocking Sir Alex Ferguson's comments about Spanish history.
Ramón Calderón, the Real president, infuriated United last month by suggesting that “nobody can prevent a player from moving because slavery was abolished a long time ago”, to which Ferguson responded by making reference to the Spanish club's well-known historical links with the despised regime of General Franco.
Carlos Queiroz, Ferguson's assistant, also sought out the history books, likening Real's relentless pursuit of Ronaldo to Spain's battle for the town of Olivença, on the disputed border with Portugal, and to its claims to Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer.
Calderón suggested yesterday that United's fears of unlawful conduct by Real were misplaced, but he was also scornful of the comments by Ferguson and Queiroz. “They made references to Franco and to the Spanish occupation of Portugal,” Calderón said. “They didn't seem to me to be very well adapted.
“For now, Cristiano Ronaldo is an impossible signing. We can't do anything if the club who own him don't sell him. We would never [induce him to break his contract]. That is not the policy of Real Madrid with any club - and even less so with a club with which we have good relations, such as Manchester United.”
Even though his planned announcement about his future is yet to materialise, United are increasingly apprehensive about the Portugal forward. His mind seems to be set on playing for Real, but Barcelona will battle with their rivals for his signature if and when he decides to leave Old Trafford.
In particular, Ronaldo would be a priority for Barcelona next summer - assuming that he is not already in Madrid - as rival candidates for the club's presidency plan to launch their electoral campaigns on the back of bids to sign him.
Joan Laporta will stand for re-election, but Sandro Rosell, another candidate, believes that his links with Ronaldo - through Jorge Mendes, the player's agent, Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Portugal coach, and Nike, the sportswear company - could be significant.
United expect to see off competition from Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool within days to sign Aaron Ramsey, the highly rated Cardiff City teenager. Arsenal and Everton have also been given permission to discuss personal terms with the player, having had offers in the region of £5million accepted by Cardiff, but United are strong favourites to sign him, with the 17-year-old midfield player expected to travel to Old Trafford for talks either today or tomorrow.

real madrid and barca are great teams to play for but they have so many "key" players already but can do almost nothing against english players! if christiano moves he might end up like thierry or even beckham star players in clubs drowned with star players, competeing for their lights to shine!!!!!
Ryno Harding, Lenasia, South Africa
Man Utd should let ronaldo go, but should ask for more than 50 million. With the money, i'd rather see Ferguson buying players like Huntelaar & Quaresma.
Anyway, i expect Ronaldo wont adapt to spain, and probably end up like beckham, only he'll be packing his bags at a younger age
Anthony Leung, Hong Kong,
Let him go. No single player is bigger than the team. Any player, no matter how talented, can only play as well as the rest of the team will let him. Ronaldo is now becoming a greedy, selfish, unsettling influence and United don't need him. Let the silly boy go!

I think it's amusing! After Uniteds unreleting persuit of Owen Hargreaves last year despite being told on several occasions the player was unavailable... they then complain that Madrids actions are unlawful when the boot is on the other foot. Karma?!
Stuart, London,
Let him go he is not as good as he thinks he is..he has had a great season, but without Rooney and a Carrick/Scholes...he falls over a lot!!
Mike , Glos, UK
Maybe he's tired of playing Premier league kick & rush and wants to go and play some football?

So is a football contract actually worth the paper it's written on these days?

Why would Ronaldo want to got to a lesser club? He is currently at the peak of his career, playing for the European Champions and at a club that has just won the "worlds best league" for the 17th time. Any move would be when he is on the wane and wants an easier time in a less competative league.
AMP, London, UK
I agree Real Madrid don't need Cristiano to win more champions leagues, they need a miracle. Yes they won it 9 times, but only if you count the 5 bought by Franco in the 50's. English teams dominate now and will continue to do so for the foreseable future.
Bob, Malaga, Spain
Ronaldo is a brilliant player he wants to join Real Madrid but i dont think it will be yet he still has his time left at United and he will enjoy it while he still can.
Daniel, London,
Now Ronaldo has said he wants to leave, let's see Calderon put his money where his mouth is.
Ronaldo is the best player in the world; he's got 4 years on his contract; he's at a rich club that want to keep him. Are Madrid big enough to get him? Or are they all talk?
I think the latter.
Giordano Bennetti, Swindon,
We have won 9 champions league finals. We don't need Cristiano to win more.
Oscar Garcia , Reinosa, Spain
I remember clearly the public pursuit of Alex Ferguson and Man Utd of Dwight Yorke from Villa who rejected Utd's offer and approach.
Ferguson then stated "the boy (Yorke) wants to come to play for us and realise his ambition; Villa should be fair"
Ronaldo wants Madrid - be fair Ferguson!
Arif, Leicester, UK
I do not understand these Ferguson's comparisons. Franco , lucky, died 30 years ago and Real Madrid of today nothing has to see with the Franco's regime. Do not say madnesses Sir
victor, valencia, spain
If Ronnie goes then so be it.
United are bigger than anyone and will never die.
Gaz, Hawarden,
Ronaldo may 'dream' about playing for Madrid. Madrid may 'dream' about winning the Champions' League. However, the reality is that United are champions of Europe. Young talent thrives at United. At Madrid, 'Galacticos' sink in their own complacency. Ronaldo need United more than he realises.
Howard Stones, Otley, UK
United need you
the fans need you

stephanie gavin, maidstone, england
i want criatiano ronaldo to go to real madrid because it would be the best choice for him instead of going with barcelona. And why would it be the best choice you might think it's because we won the the liga two times already if we get ronaldo i bet real madrid might win the champions league.
Josue Garcia, chicago, united states
The Spanish-Portuguese border IS NOT a 'disputed' area, no matter 'professor' Queiroz may say. And there is not any 'battle' for Olivenza, which is a small, quiet Spanish village, in the Extremadura region, near the city of Badajoz. Nowhere there feels their town is 'disputed' by nobody.
