Manchester United have lodged an official complaint to Fifa about Real Madrid’s pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Premier League champions are angry that the Spanish club have repeatedly and publicly courted the Portugal forward without lodging an official bid for him, calling their tactics “totally unacceptable”.
United confirmed their decision in an official statement today, which read: "On 27 May, Manchester United made clear its intention to report Real Madrid to Fifa if it continued to involve itself in the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.
"Unfortunately, Real Madrid has not kept its own counsel and the club feels it has no alternative but to make a formal complaint to the world governing body, which it has done today. The precise content and nature will remain confidential."
Fifa confirmed they had received the complaint. "We have received an official request from Manchester United to look into the matter," a spokesman said. "We have only just received the documents so we need some time to analyse them before we can make any decision."
Bernd Schuster, the Real Madrid coach, is on record as saying that Ronaldo, who was named Player of the Year by both the Professional Footballers’ Association and the Football Writers’ Association.
“There are other players we have been looking at but everything has slowed down a little due to all this Cristiano Ronaldo business, seeing as he is the big priority for the club," Schuster said.
“The English way has been a perfect education for a player with such exceptional individual talent. There he has learned to enjoy his football as a complete professional. This means we would get a Cristiano who would arrive here with his lessons learned.”
Ronaldo has continued to send out mixed messages about his future after helping United win the Champions League and retain their Barclays Premier League title.
He recently told Brazilian website Terra: “I would like to play for Real Madrid - but only if it is true they are ready to pay what Manchester United ask of them. However, it does not depend on me.”
The Portugal international then vowed not to discuss the subject further until after Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, where he is representing his country.
United’s action is bound to dismay Real as only last week, president Ramon Calderon insisted his club would never risk their relationship with them by trying to unsettle Ronaldo.
“We can’t do anything if the club that owns him don’t want to sell,” he told Marca. “We would never (approach a player under contract) as this is not the policy of Real Madrid, and especially not with a club who we are such good friends with.”

real hasn´t tapped ronaldo, it´s his dream to play at the bernabeu, as any other player of the world would dream off. Man U has instead tapped roubinho. and fergies comments about franco and the invasion of portugal are sick and profoundly ignorant.
mike, london, england
Such a pain!! Ronaldo please stay in England..all this staff for a football player!!
Marta, Madrid,
United aren't going to sell Ronaldo this summer because he has four years on his contract, and by complaining to FIFA now it should make Real Madrid more cautious about publicly tapping Ronaldo up for next year.
gaz, stirling, uk
Man U sour grapes - look at Saha's move to OT. Madrid haven't tapped the player up - i.e. approached him directly. They have just made the whole world, including CR, aware of what they're willing to pay.
Fergie knows that he's lost Ronaldo because he wasn't a good enough manager to keep him.
Josh, London, UK
This is real rich coming from Man U; Ferguson, notwithstanding the rather pretentious 'Sir' Fergie will always be what he really is - a publician - a person lacking in tact and class, precisely what he accuses RM of lacking. Does he not recall his pursuit of Hargreaves, Carrick, etc....
P. Sharma, Oxford, UK
FIFA will not do anything. They are paid by the clubs who generate bigger revenues through increasing the media coverage of football. Stop the media frenzy and this fuss will go away.
Gareth Loggenberg, Chatham, UK
Please! United don't tap up players anywhere as badly as RM who are repeatedly making their desire to sign Ronaldo public and using the media's influence to unsettle him. Fergie admires Berbatov but he's not 'obsessed' about signing him like Calderon is. RM simply don't know when to back off.
Dew, London,
Typical, having tapped up players themselves over the years, when it happens to them the great manchester united start bleating. !! They realise that without Ronaldo they are just ordinary.
phil barnes, chichester, uk
Did Man U also report themselves for doing the same to Spurs over Berbatov? I doubt it.
FIFA will do nothing as either way they make money.
Wardy, Lisbon, Portugal
Why does it take a club to report another for anything to be done? I'm neither a Man Utd fan or a RM fan, but for pities sake, surely the governing body reads the papers? Shouldn't they be pro-active rather than reactive? Is it any wonder people don't think this kind of situation will ever end?
andrew, darlington,
About time too. The club employed the same tactics with Anelka, Zidane and Figo to name a few. Hopefully a wrap across the knuckles will have the desired effect and they will back off.
Harry, Manchester, England
Man Utd like everyone else in the footballing world knows that going to FIFA is a waste of time. They simply won't do anything! The only reason Man Utd have done this is to show their intent that they will not sell Ronaldo, at least this year.
Raza, London, UK
Waste of time going to FIFA. They don't even like English clubs - look at the attitude of people like Blatter and Platini. In fact they will probably open the doors wider for Real. And the contracts are a waste of time. Might as well pay the the players on a weekly basis and forget any paperwork.
Peter, Conwy,
Even though I'm not an MU fan, I feel that RM have acted with no honor in this instance. Never making a direct approach, they have instead made leading statements, leaked stories about CR 'dreaming' of a move to RM and what they will pay him, even used his mother in this. They deserve punishment.
