Carlos Queiroz, the Manchester United assistant manager, has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to remain at Old Trafford because of the affection the club has for the talented winger.
Ronaldo's future at United remains uncertain with speculation continuing over a possible move to Real Madrid although Ramon Calderon, the Spanish club's president, said yesterday that he would not break the bank to sign the player.
Calderon also admitted there was little his club could do if United did not want to sell the 23-year-old, and Queiroz believes United is the best place for Ronaldo to progress.
"Manchester United is very special," Queiroz said. "Because of that we know how to surround Cristiano completely with all the affection and all the attention he deserves.
"However, not speaking is the most sensible course of action at this moment, so that we don't contribute to a less-than-positive spectacle and so we don't aid those whose interests are difficult to identify."
Queiroz is something of a father figure to Ronaldo at United and was instrumental in keeping the player at Old Trafford in 2006, following his role in Wayne Rooney's dismissal in that year's World Cup quarter-final between Portugal and England.
Whether or not Ronaldo stays could depend on the future of Queiroz, who has been linked with the Portugal coaching post vacated by Luiz Felipe Scolari. The 55-year-old former Real Madrid head coach did not rule himself out of the job.
"I'm not going to put myself on the market," Queiroz said. "Because the decision on the national coach should not be a result of those who make themselves candidates, but a decision that is conscious, rational and based on what the federation judges is necessary for the team.
"I'm not going to tell you whether or not I'm contacted, that way I know for sure that it will be dealt with in due form and in due place."

He should go to a club with a decent European record, i.e. AC, Real, Liverpool, Ajax or Bayern. We (Man Utd) won't win it for at least another 10 years.

If Calderon plays his hand well, he has not only supervalued Ronaldo with that excessive bid for the player, but will behave like a gentleman, and allow Ronaldo to stay @ManU.
He is a lawyer! He'll go now for Arshavin.
nicki, palm springs, california, usa
if he stays, united have one of the best players in the world; if he goes, they have £60...£70... £80 million. either way, they are league and european cup champions. I'm not really sure why supporters of other clubs seem so smug. plastic ignorance, I guess. the real world cares less about bob.

I still dont understand the reason for Sir Alex 's silence, in my humble opinion he should have been in contact with Cristiano Ronaldo since the beginning, even if Scolari said no, doesnt he have his mobile number ? CR needs reassurance from his club manager.Lets hope Queiroz will achieve his goal.

100 euro's and he's yours. You can sell shirts for years then. Madrid still won't have a defence.

Plastic fans, plastic players,,, Who in the real world of football cares
Bob, London, uk
I'm with Dave. The only reason that Scolari is persuading Christiano Ronaldo to move to Real Madrid, is that he will be the new Chelsea manager, and he doesn't want Ronaldo to wreck his chances of winning every trophy under the Sun.
Its a sly tactic, and not one which belongs in football.
Joe, Surrey, UK
He should go!

Ronaldo was talking a few days ago about his future. And he did it on a radio program in Spain. He said that joining Real Madrid would be a setep forward, and that Real is the club where he has always wanted to be. In fact, he said it would be "a dream" playing for Real Madrid. I think he'll leave.
Oliver, Madrid, Spain
Why on earth would you finesse a player that clearly does not want to stay?
Stephen Manick, Trinidad,
Carlos Q is a sensible chap who should be able to bring an air of sense to this whole silly episode.
What disgusts me most of all is Chelsea using Scholari to try and persuade Ronaldo to leave their rivals then announcing his appointment to cause damage to Potugal and try and force the issue
Dave, Notts, UK
Thank god! A bit of sense. United have said nothing for ages now, because i think from their point of view, there is no issue.
Ronaldo will stay.
