It has become a sadly familiar sight. The ball does not break for him, the frustration grows and suddenly Wayne Rooney boils over. It happened twice during Manchester United’s pre-season friendly against Kaizer Chiefs at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday. A kick at Onismor Bhasera, the Chiefs defender, in the first half went undetected, but not a reckless swipe at Tinashe Nengomasha in the second period, which drew a booking.
With 20 minutes remaining, Rooney was taken off by Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, protecting him from the possibility of a sending-off.
That would be no surprise to Pelé, who believes that Rooney’s brittle temperament is hampering his development. The forward has worked to curb his temper, but the Brazil legend believes that he needs to work harder.
“I like Wayne Rooney, but he hasn’t reached the peak of Euro 2004 again,” Pelé said. “He had two or three very good years and then lost a little bit in his performances – I don’t know why. When he is tangling with opponents, Rooney has to learn how to defend himself – not attack the opponent. If you can protect yourself from challenges, it will be easier to keep your temper.”
Keeping tempers has proved difficult at Old Trafford this summer and just when it seemed that Ferguson and David Gill had drawn a line under Cristiano Ronaldo’s future by insisting that he will remain at Manchester United, the player has made it clear that he has other ideas.
Ronaldo was told at a meeting with Ferguson in Lisbon a week ago that he would not be sold, an uncompromising stance echoed at the weekend by Gill, the chief executive. But although Ronaldo claimed in an interview yesterday with ESPN, the American sports broadcaster, that he would remain “motivated” if he stays at Old Trafford, he was again ambiguous about his future.
“I’ve had hundreds of questions about Manchester United and Real Madrid,” Ronaldo, who is on holiday in Los Angeles while he recovers from the ankle surgery that will rule him out of action until October, said. “What do you want me to say? That I’m going or I’m staying? I don’t know about the future, only God knows it. I can’t say any more.” It remains to be seen how Ferguson reacts to the latest outburst, although by publicly defying his manager so soon after their meeting, Ronaldo is playing a dangerous game. Ferguson was incensed by Ronaldo’s insinuation that his predicament was tantamount to slavery and the Scot may have no alternative but to fine the player.
“Great players are always hounded by great clubs,” Ronaldo said. “It’s a normal situation. I want to be happy, regardless of where I play. I can be happy everywhere if I am with people I like, if I am animated, motivated. Am I motivated to continue at United? I am always motivated.”
Some have suggested that Ronaldo’s badgering for a move to Real is an attempt to get an improved contract, but Gill has insisted that the player will not be given a new deal, having signed a five-year contract worth £120,000 a week last year.

It's plain to see that he has very aggressive, sometimes violent tendencies. It's not through provocation, but his own personality. His early great potential has not been realized and will probably not be now. His strike rate is OK, but not good enough to be a world-class striker like Shearer was.

Rooney again proved to one and all, that he is an overpaid child with a tantrum.
Tell Rooney that he is useless if he spends his time on the bench sporting red cards.
If he insists on his childish behavior, he will be sold.
Robert Postuma, Montreal, Canada
Rooney must have a problem, what's the point of getting angry playing against Kaizer Chiefs? And what are Man U doing playing against a rock band?
David, Madrid,
If Rooney is given 'anger-management' treatment is it sure to help him control his feelings but is also likely to curb his enthusiasm and passion for the game as, part of HIS mental make-up depends on 'anger' to get the best playing results throughout the ninety minutes. LEAVE HIM ALONE!
Derek Clifton, Andover, Hampshire, England
Pele has stated the obvious, but SAF isn't even going to try to tame Rooney's temper. He didn't try to smooth the rough edges of Keane, Scholes, Butt, the Nevilles, etc, etc, so why would he want to work on Rooney?
Intimidation of officials, and opponents, always has been Man U's stock in trade.
Barrie Collins, Long Sault, Ontario, Canada
Ronaldo will see his contract out and if Rooney and Tevez weren't so unselfish then they would score as many goals as Ronaldo does. United fans have nothing to worry about, the only thing coming their way is success!
Matt, Melbourne, Australia
It's a pity for Ronaldo that God's name is Alex Ferguson

Bing, London,
Odd. Rooney's behaviour seems to have improved - there will always be outbreaks and calmer players are not immune. According to him on TV, he said he hadn't been trying at all - it was just that he'd grown up. I haven't seen any of his old thug style myself, so presumably it is lessening.
Chloe Lin, Blackheath, London,
Rooney behaves like Manchester United behaves.
Pete, London,
I know that he was the best player on the planet and still is with some but Pele please stop voicing views on Manchester United!!! Leave us alone! Shouting at Ronaldo made no difference the little sneek wants out, telling Rooney that he should grow up is a no win situation. Please stop interferring.
sarah, warrington,
ManU has elevated the technique of bullying into their general tactics: Bullying of players, teams, games, referees and the FA.
They enjoy a carte-blanche status and make use of it, why should young Rooney be different or learn anything there? After all, you wouldn't hold an AA meeting in a pub...
Ilja, Sliema, Malta
It was apparent from the very beginning that Rooney was a 'crazy colt' who has been allowed to become a 'wicked stallion'. Ferguson is to blame for not having exercised proper man management at the earlier stages of his career.
Ferguson has done his bit - it's time for him to retire!
Trevor Dee, Torbay, UK
Is anybody surprised by Rooney - he has always had suspect
terperament and could easily have been sent off for foul and abusive language to match officials in most EPL games last season.
He has not developed into the world class player he should have done and is at least a stone overweight.
Marc, Liverpool, UK
if ronaldo is being hounded by real, he should complain to fifa.
I assume that's what he meant. he confused the issue by calling them a great club, of course.
