Manchester United are expected to open formal talks with representatives of Carlos Tévez this week as they seek to tie up a permanent deal for the Argentina forward. The prospective fee - £35 million - could break the British transfer record.
Tévez has been concerned that United have not begun negotiations over an extension to his two-year loan arrangement, which runs until next summer, and the Old Trafford hierarchy want to address the situation.
Tévez moved to Old Trafford after a complex transfer from West Ham United last summer, when United agreed to pay a loan fee of £5 million per season to companies that own the player’s economic rights, with the option to sign him permanently for a further three years. His representatives are likely to discuss selling outright for a fee of up to £35 million this summer - cancelling the second loan payment - but that figure is higher than United would have expected.
David Gill, the United chief executive, said last week that he would not risk losing him at the end of the season and a source close to the player said: “A number of clubs are interested in him, but his heart is with United and he wants to stay for a long time.”
Tévez scored 19 goals in 48 appearances in his first season at Old Trafford last term. A fee in excess of £30 million for him would eclipse the transfer record set when Chelsea signed Andriy Shevchenko two years ago, breaking a previous best set by United when they signed Rio Ferdinand from Leeds United for £29.1 million in 2002.
Tévez’s move may not become a permanent transfer until January or next summer, to avoid a dent in United’s transfer budget. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, wants to sign Dimitar Berbatov and is unperturbed by Tottenham Hotspur’s complaint to the Premier League about the pursuit of the Bulgaria forward, who is likely to cost about £28 million.

I saw comments like "get rid of Sir Alex", or "Tevez deserves to be on the bench", and I was left aghast. The I realised that the comments came from Americans.... bless them....so I reached for the pinch of salt.
Matthew, Manchester, United Kingdom
I certainly don't think he's worth £35m. Not by a long shot.
Stuart, Leicester,
Tevez is a great supporting player, but he's no centerpiece for a team like Utd. Even £20 is very high. He might trick a #5-10 side into that much. He likely wouldn't honor his contract anyway. Scooby Doo is less confused about his own worth than players like him. Owners, stand firm! Agents go away!
Shannon, Richmond, VA, USA
Tevez's accomplishments in South America - overlooked by European sports pages - make him arguably the best player in the world.
If I had to make a choice over Tevez and Ronaldo, I wouldn't hesitate picking Tevez. Many of Ronaldo's goals were soft, against weak opponents.
Jack, San Francisco,
Dear Man U. Don't worry about losing Ronaldo. You should start planning on getting rid of Sir Alex!
35 million for Tevez? Sir Alex has snapped his stack! Find him a rubber room where he can bounce around and babble happily to himself....unless, of course, it's a typo for 3.5 million??
Barrie Collins, Long Sault, Ontario, Canada
I thought Man U had already paid £18m for him, obviously this was a leasing arrangement. £35m is crazy money, especially as he has pushed Rooney out of his best position.

Re: Andy
My comment isn't based on any speculative article, it's based on fact.
When we signed Tevez last summer, David Gill and Sir Alex said the fee was set to make the deal permanent at any time during the two year loan period.
David Gill repeated this week that "We know what we have to pay".
Alex, Manchester,
I think this is part of the game of chicken being played out between United ans Spurs over Berbatov.
Assuming Berbatov comes and assuming Fergie is genuine in playing Rooney as "support stiker", where does that place Tevez? Answer on the bench, which is just about where he deserves to be.
Bryan McGrath, Weston-s-Mare, England
35 million? for Carlos Tevez? Breaking the transfer record? Somebody must be round the bend! He's worth 20 at most!
Roger, Arese, Italy
re: alex
you will have read about this previous 'set in stone' agreement in a similar article to the one above, so why believe one above the other? i would suggest that the sharp operators behind tevez's recent career moves may well have held back the right to set the price at the time of signing
andy, sunderland,
Tevez worked hard and scored some important goals last season,so he is going to be very popular amongst the fans but I am yet to be convinced that he is the real deal, there were just too many games last season where he did next to nothing
I'd be surprised if Utd paid more than £20 Million for him
Fergus Sira-Lexon, England,
The permanent fee for Tevez is already in place, with it reportedly being £15 million.
There are no discussions to take place over a fee as it is already set in stone.
David Gill said this week they would address the issue in due course, but there was no panic as a year still remained on the loan
Alex, Manchester,
