Hull City will not give up hope of trying to resign Frazier Campbell on loan, but Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated that the young Manchester United striker will be given a chance to stake a claim for a first-team place at Old Trafford this season.
Campbell, 20, was an instrumental figure in Hull’s promotion to the Barclays Premier League via the play-offs last season, scoring 15 goals to finish as the club’s top scorer while on loan. But after he scored the only goal in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s testimonial at Old Trafford on Saturday, against Espanyol, Ferguson expressed a desire to keep the player at the club.
The United manager also has high hopes for another striker, Manucho, the Angolan signed on a three-year deal last January and for whom the club will apply for a work permit, although that will not signal the end of the Premier League champions’ interest in Dimitar Berbatov, the Tottenham Hotspur and Bulgaria forward.
Campbell may yet go out on loan again in the event that Berbatov signs, although the player has already set his sights on challenging Wayne Rooney and Co for a starting place. “Now I’m back at United, the plan is to try to force my way into the first team,” he said. “I’m going to continue to work hard and try to do enough to stay here and go on from there.”
