Ryan Giggs, the Manchester United winger, has warned his team-mates they dare not fail to match Chelsea's hunger for success over the coming season if they are to complete a hat-trick of Barclays Premier League title successes.
The champions were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United in their opening fixture and face tough matches away to Portsmouth, Liverpool and Chelsea in the coming weeks.
And with United's home match against Fulham at the end of August postponed because of their involvement in the Uefa Super Cup, Sir Alex Ferguson's team could find themselves adrift of the early-season pace-setters if they slip up again.
“Chelsea did not win the Premier League last year,” Giggs said. “I have been in that position; you are hungry and determined, and you want to win it, simple as that.
“We have got to match their determination, their hunger and their desire, but we have players at the club who have tasted success over the last couple of years and want more.”
Meanwhile, the next few days could see United involved in more than one transfer deal, with Ferguson hopeful of making progress in his bid to sign Dimitar Berbatov, the striker, from Tottenham Hotspur, and also considering a surprise offer from Arsenal for Mikael Silvestre, the former France international defender.
