No team have successfully defended the European Cup since it was reinvented as the Champions League in the early 1990s and Sir Alex Ferguson urged his Manchester United side yesterday to focus on the “great challenge” that lies ahead. Of more immediate concern, though, is the Uefa Super Cup against Zenit St Petersburg this evening, with Ferguson eager for his team to sustain their winning habit on all fronts.
The Super Cup is regarded as a mere trinket by some, but Ferguson, who still regrets fielding a weakened team against Lazio nine years ago, says that United will take it seriously, just as they did the Community Shield, in which they beat Portsmouth this month. He has talked up the importance of winning the Super Cup - and indeed the Club World Championship, which will take them to Tokyo in December - and stated that the objective, apart from giving much-needed match practice to Gary Neville, Owen Hargreaves and Nani, is to return to Manchester this evening with another trophy.
Speaking before the Champions League draw, which put United in the same group as Villarreal, Celtic and Aalborg BK, Ferguson stated his determination for United to become the first club to defend the European Cup since AC Milan's back-to-back wins in 1989 and 1990.
“No one has defended it since then, that's right,” the United manager said. “It's a great challenge. The best way to look at a European draw is simply to progress from the group stages. The challenge is to get ten points as quickly as you can.”
As for tonight's match, Ferguson predicted a “really good game” against Zenit, who played some wonderful football en route to their Uefa Cup triumph last season. They still possess the playmaking talents of Andrei Arshavin, stalked this summer by Barcelona, Chelsea and, most persistently of all, Tottenham Hotspur, but this could represent his farewell match. “He is with us and we will see whether he plays or not,” Dick Advocaat, the Zenit coach, said.
Ferguson was, unusually, more open about his selection plans, confirming that Neville and Hargreaves, after injury, and Nani, after suspension, would start the game, meaning that Neville could pick up another trophy as captain, despite not having appeared in the Premier League for almost 18 months.
