Sir Alex Ferguson is waiting to find out the extent of the injuries suffered by Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes in the 3-0 Champions League victory over Aalborg in Denmark last night.
"Wayne felt his ankle," Ferguson said. "We hope it is not ligament trouble - but he is doubtful for Saturday."
Scholes picked up a knee injury after being the victim of a poor challenge and Ferguson's prognosis for the midfielder was gloomier. "We do not know exactly how serious at this moment in time," he said. "It looks like medial ligament damage, which would be six to eight weeks - a bit of a blow."
On the plus side for United, Cristiano Ronaldo completed his first full 90 minutes this season and Dimitar Berbatov scored his first goal for the club. Ferguson is confident the Bulgarian's performance will lead to better things. "It will be a great confidence booster for him," he said. "As a striker, you always want to get an early goal after being transferred for such a large amount of money.
"He missed a chance quite early, which he was probably a bit frustrated with. But he took his goals well, particularly the second one. It was a real striker's finish, and he will be happy with that."
