Diego Maradona made a guest appearance at Manchester United's training ground, leaving the players and even the manager star-struck ahead of their crucial Premier League match with Arsenal.
The World-Cup winner presented Rio Ferdinand with a signed shirt as a 30th birthday present as he continued his tour of Europe following his appointment as Argentina manager.
Maradona, accompanied by assistant Carlos Bilardo, went to Carrington to meet Carlos Tevez, who, along with Liverpool's Javier Mascherano, are expected to play a major part of in the new manager's plans. However, his visit left United's players, and especially Ferdinand impressed.
"We were like schoolkids around a star coming to school," Ferdinand said. "In my eyes he is the best footballer ever. He is one of my heroes, if not the shining beacon when I was a kid. I had all his videos. He was the player everyone wanted to be.
"He was been the best. He was my idol and part of the reason why I started to play football. I can't hold him in higher esteem than that. To be able to shake his hand, get a cuddle of him and a picture, it made my birthday."
Ferdinand said there was an extra competitiveness around training, which did not go unnoticed by Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager.
"I think the gaffer would probably like him to come every day the way he raised standards in training," Ferdinand said. "Everyone was trying to impress him. I hope he will go back to Argentina and say he's seen a great player - Rio Ferdinand!"
Ferguson can understand the reaction because he still regards Maradona among the game's greatest players.
"It was good. The players were all delighted to see him," Ferguson said. "It is arguable who is the best player in the world but without a doubt, he is in the best two or three."

It's a pity Ferdinand wasn't around for the 1970 World Cup Finals !
The GREATEST footballer to ever grace a field was .......PELE !!!

Diego, if you never had touched that ball witho your hand...who can say nothing about you? What about the second goal to England? It was an art creation...
Gerardo, Córdoba, Argentina
Great to see that he has the respect of the modern day players.
Ken, Wollongong, Australia
Because no-one's really interested in Liverpool ste, just slightly fascinated.
m Walker, manchester,
I too regard him as the greatest ever . He is similarly regarded by the majority of Italians, Spanish etc. No one there is aware of the "that goal" . England however is "blessed" with tabloids.
Marco Borg, London, United Kingdom
Because Ste, Liverpool are an also ran club. A period of sucess built on a 2nd division heritage. The truth hurts.
ben travers, london, uk
Maybe for English fans who have nothing better to do than complain Ed. I think most of us will remember him for the other goal, probably the greatest of all time and the only man ever to almost single handlely win a world cup
Dusan, Nottingham,
Maradona also visited Melwood today, met the Liverpool coaching and playing staff and also had talks with his future Captain. Why has this visit not made the press but the Utd one did?
ste, liverpool,
Actually the hand ball is considered something quite beautiful in Argentina.
Gareth Tye, Santiago, Chile
Our lives are sometimes defined in a matter of moments.Unfortunately his will be the hand ball incident which is by no means a reflection on the fact that he really was a great player,I think he must look back on that with regret. Still,a tiger of a player and I'm pleased he payed a visit to O/T.
Ed Allen, Whitby, Canada
God bless the little guy, that goal against Swansea...what a scorcher!
