Wayne Rooney could be charged with violent conduct by Uefa after the European governing body said that it would study video evidence to decide whether the striker had stamped on an opponent during the 2-2 Champions League draw with Aalborg last night.
Kasper Risgard, the Aalborg midfield player, complained that he had Rooney’s stud marks on his chest after an ugly tangle with the United forward four minutes before half-time. Rooney escaped punishment from Laurent Duhamel, the French referee — who also did no more than award a free kick after Rooney’s lunge at Michael Jakobsen early in the second half — but the first incident could yet be investigated by Uefa’s control and disciplinary body if Duhamel says that he did not see it.
"We are aware of the incident and the disciplinary panel will study the footage and newspaper reports before deciding whether to take action," a Uefa spokesman said. A decision on the matter is expected to be made later today.
If Rooney is found guilty, he could be suspended for at least the first leg of the first knockout round when the Champions League resumes in February.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, said that he had not seen the incident, but the statement made by Risgard was damning. “I can see the marks on my chest, big marks,” Risgard said. “He apologised, so it’s OK, but I don’t know what happened. He was jumping on my chest. I don’t know why, but I think he was a little bit frustrated.
“The referee didn’t say anything. I’m not even sure he saw it. Anywhere else but here and it would have been a red card. I think referees are frightened to punish players at Old Trafford.”
Allan Kuhn, the Aalborg coach, was not so forthright. Asked whether he felt that Rooney had stamped on his player, he replied: “I think so, yes. I am not 100 per cent sure. I thought he looked a little bit frustrated, but I have not seen the pictures. As I see it, that’s not good for a fantastic footballer like him. You have to keep your head calm in a situation like that, especially a world-class player like him. But stupid things happen in football. I’m not worried about that at all.”
