Graphic: five ways for United to finish off Arsenal at the Emirates
Wayne Rooney is confident that there will be no way back for Arsenal if Manchester United score an away goal in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.
Rooney could not hide his disappointment at United’s failure to put the tie beyond Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, but having run out 1-0 winners courtesy of John O’Shea’s second goal of the season, the England forward believes that Arsène Wenger’s team will face an uphill task if the European champions find the net in the return leg.
“We know if we get a goal, they’ll need to score three so we’re in a good position,” Rooney said. “It is frustrating we didn’t score more, but the good thing is we were creating chances and if we can create a few more at Arsenal, hopefully we can take some of them.
“I don’t know how they’ll be feeling, but they know what a difficult game they’ll be in for next week. They know they can’t really afford to concede a goal, but it’s going to be close.
“We have to go there and try to score. If we do that, it will give us a great opportunity to get to the final.”
Patrice Evra, who returned to something approaching his best form with an assured display up against Theo Walcott, echoed Rooney’s sentiments.
“Our performance makes me very confident for the second leg,” the France left back said. “This is Manchester United, we can go anywhere and win and we can score anywhere.
“If it had not been for Manuel Almunia [the Arsenal goalkeeper], we could have won 4-0. He made some fantastic saves and we have to hope he doesn’t do the same next week, but we have the experience and can do the same at the Emirates.”
Haunted by an experience with Monaco during the 2003-04 season, however, Evra is refusing to get carried away by talk of United retaining the Barclays Premier League and Champions League.
“It is too early to speak about winning both titles back to back,” he said. “I remember when I was playing for Monaco and we were first in the French league with ten games to go and we were playing Porto in the final of the Champions League.
“We lost against Porto and we lost the league and it turned out to be my worst-ever season so things can change quickly.”
