Confusion surrounds the future of Kevin Keegan after Newcastle United issued a statement tonight denying that they had sacked him as manager.
Earlier in the day angry fans had gathered outside St James' Park to protest against his departure after widespread speculation that Newcastle had dismissed him.
The club, however, finally issued the following statement this evening:
"Newcastle United can confirm that meetings between members of the board and manager Kevin Keegan were held both yesterday and today.
"Kevin has raised a number of issues and those have been discussed with him.
"The club wants to keep progressing with its long-term strategy and would like to stress that Kevin is extremely important, both now and in the future.
"Newcastle United values the effort and commitment shown by Kevin since his return to St. James' Park and wants him to continue to play an instrumental role as manager of the club.
"For the avoidance of doubt the club has not sacked Kevin Keegan as manager."
It was originally thought that the Geordie favourite had been shown the door after showdown talks with club owner Mike Ashley. But with Newcastle denying this to be the case, it is unclear whether Keegan has in fact resigned or whether he is considering his position.
Speculation mounted all morning that Keegan’s second reign as manager was drawing to a close after his main transfer targets failed to materialise when the transfer window closed at midnight.
Fans chanting "sack the board" arrived at the ground to show their support for the man they hailed as their "Messiah" but media were forced by security guards to leave the stadium grounds as the club initially declined to comment on the reports.
There is little doubt that Keegan is unhappy about recent events at Newcastle, relating specifically to the club’s transfer policy and the level of influence he is afforded as manager, which has been reduced since the appointment of Dennis Wise as executive director of football.

We can't question the temperament of any man in KK's position, it is simply untenable
If Mr Ashley is to sort this out he needs to act quickly and remove Wise allowing KK to buy/sell the players that he alone wants
This is simply a case of too many chiefs not enough indians
I hope KK stays!
Darren Slight, Boldon Colliery, United Kingdom
Kevin Keegan has left a great footbaling legacy. He rescued Newcastle United and promoted them to the Premier League, same story with Man City and Fulham. Three clubs that are still in the premier league, and look where Man City are now. Good luck KK, you were a much underated manager.
Jay, Nhants,
Never trust a man with two first names.
Alan, Jersey, Channel Islands
To - chris, Dudley, UK - Coming out with the old "rattle out of pram" is a weak criticism of KK. He is a man of integrity and staying around when it is obvious to him what direction the club are being taken by Ashley et al is the stategy of a weak man. Only a fool would hang around. Good Luck KK.
Carlo Van Hinsk, Shooters Hill, UK
Wherever you get Dennis Wise you will get trouble.
james Allen, manchester, england
Anita of Newcastle-Ashley delivered what the fans wanted! They called for Allerdyce to go and he went. They called for Keegan and he got him! Until NUFC Supporters realise they aren't automatically entitled to 4th / 5th place they will always be unhappy.
Leigh, Birmingham , UK
How can anyone have faith in someone who, prior to the most important 48 hours of the year for a Premier League chairman is downing pints in 1 like some kind of lager lout.
Charlie Howard, London, UK
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with his disastrous blind faith in Joey Barton. The fans weren't happy, the media weren't happy - Barton was probably the only one who was happy!
Bad judgement, bad man managment skills - i'm glad he's going.
Jack, London,
Oh what a suprise, Keegan has thrown his toys out of the pram again. Why does any football club employ this ultra reliable prima donna. Reliably unreliable that is.
chris, Dudley, UK
Methinks Dennis Wise has been after the job from day one, was brought in to cover for keegan if the season didnt end well etc.... oviously the powers that be trusted his judgement more then KK's from the start...
all this talk but NUFC have signed better then us LFC, wish we had Jonas!!!!!!
josh, leeds,
I think it's damned disgrace, how dare Mike Ashley sit amongst the fans with his toon shirt on has if he's one of them; when all the time he's done nothing but try and ruin the club. If he thinks the toon army will stand for this treacherous behaviour he's mistaken. KK was the best shame on u MA.
Anita, Newcastle,UK, Newcastle upon tyne,
Is there any bigger joke in English football than Newcastle "United"? You can hear the guffaws from Wearside all the way from the Tyne Bridge.
Ross, Gateshead, UK
Any true football fan can only regret Kevin Keegans departure and really feel for the long suffering Toon Army.
They really deserve a break.
Too(n) Good to Go Down? We'll Soon See when they meet Hull
Both could now be relegated by Christmas.

Tim Chapman, Cairo, Egypt
as soon as Wise keft Leeds to go to the toon it was apparent that he was in line for KKs job when KK self destructed as was inevitably going to happen, and is going to happen
karlos, wakefield, england
A few days after Keegan was appointed, the Newcastle chairman came out of a top Newcastle hotel and saw an old lady struggling with her shopping.
"Can you manage, pet?", said the chairman.
" Keegan's not gone already?", said the old dear, with pursed lips.
Nigel Wroe, Doncaster, UK
Then it's Championship League next year for the Geordies if KK has indeed left. Who in their right mind would take on NUFC with a billionaire owner who won't spend on new players but happily sees off the club's better men - Milner and KK, to name but two!
An utter travesty!
Ian Dickson, Brighton, UK
Wise should walk, not Keegan!
phil, hong kong,
Tom from Northampton... you dont think Man City now have a chance?
Tim, seoul, korea
As I said when the news about Milner surfaced, if Kev is sensible he will be the next one through the door.
Ashton is asset-stripping and somehow expects to sell the dysfunctional remnants of a team for more than he paid!
Ian Tinn, Slough, England
What a ridiculous mess they have made of it all so far. I'm not surprised Keegan wants to walk out. The Board should be sacked for the simple crime of NOT HAVING A CLUE what they are doing.
Matthew Tom, London,
If true, I fear for NUFC. I think Kevin has been remarkably tolerant to put up with this bunch of jokers.
You just cannot manage a premier league team while others decide who you can or cannot buy.
If Kevin has left this lot will not know what has hit them. The fans have had enough!
T David Pattison, Edinburgh, Scotland
Do you know what, I have just signed up for the 3 yr season ticket deal at SJP, I travel back from Belgium for games, home and away when I can and all I can say is that if Keegan does go, Ashley should be utterly ashamed of himself. No-one could do a better job of the mess that my club is than KK
Chris, Brussels, Belgium
Keagan was a great player and like Harry Redknapp the
Portsmouth manager, is a great manager only if he has
money to spend buying top players. Otherwise he gets frustrated and his explosive temper means he walks.
Philip, Dorset, England
Well Im sure this next fiasco will ensure the 3000 empty seats at the last home game are filled. Newcastle become a laughing stock again with the tightest billionaire not wanting to spend any of his cash.
Bring back Freddie Shepherd. We might go bankrupt but at least we will have some excitement
Ian Duncan, south shields, england
The English Premier League has become a league of
4 teams....Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool. No one
else can break into this group, the rest are playing for fifth
place and occassionally a cup. Keagan sees it is hopeless
and will eventually explode.
Tom, Northampton, UK
