Kevin Keegan is facing an acrimonious end to his long association with Newcastle United this morning and the prospect of a multi-million-pound wrangle over compensation. Perceived humiliation over the club’s transfer policy appears to have made the manager’s position untenable and, although Newcastle have again insisted that he remains in charge, the timing of his departure seems to be simply a matter for the lawyers to dispute.
In a statement released this morning, the club have reiterated that Keegan remains their manager and that negotiations between him and the board continue as both parties seek a resolution.
"Newcastle United Football Club can confirm that discussions are ongoing between the board and Kevin Keegan," a statement read. "Both the club and Kevin would like to reiterate that Kevin remains as manager.
"He has not resigned nor has he been sacked, as has been confirmed in respective statements made by Kevin and Newcastle United Football Club."
After farcical scenes that included bewildered fans demonstrating over the “sacking” of their hero, it is hard to believe that Keegan will stay for long — or want to — given his repeated clashes with the board. His departure could be confirmed today.
Keegan has been so at odds with the directors over transfers that some Newcastle players were among those to believe that club and manager had parted company yesterday lunchtime. It appears to have been only a reluctance to surrender the payoff on his three-year deal, worth up to £3 million a year, that stopped Keegan following through his threats to take his leave. Whether he jumps or is seen to be pushed, it seems highly unlikely that he will be seen in a dugout again.
The former England manager has been so impotent in recent days that, having angrily questioned the proposed sale of Joey Barton on Monday, it is believed he was told that every member of the first-team squad could be sold, irrespective of his opinion.
The directors have pushed their manager to the brink by dictating the buying and selling of players, but, bizarrely, they seem happy for him to continue for the time being. Perhaps they want to avoid more trouble from supporters who are in revolt over Mike Ashley’s stewardship. The crowd of 47,711 for the opening home Barclays Premier League match of the season, against Bolton Wanderers, was the lowest in more than a decade and there is talk of a boycott of the next fixture, against Hull City on Saturday week.
Suggestions that Dennis Wise and Gustavo Poyet — the Tottenham Hotspur first-team coach who worked under Wise at Leeds United — may take over from Keegan have led to further uproar on Tyneside.
Boardroom sources claimed last night that they had spent most of the day talking Keegan out of resigning, but there is no doubt who the fans will side with, even with mixed results since he took over from Sam Allardyce in January.
The humiliations heaped on him stretch back over several months, since Wise was brought in as executive director (football). Wise and Tony Jimenez, both London-based directors, were appointed by Ashley, the owner, to guide transfer policy, but their seizing of control has brought only conflict with the manager.
Those rows came to a head with the recruitment on Monday of Ignacio González, the Uruguay midfield player, and Xisco, the Spanish striker, even though Keegan had not scouted the players or approved their signings. He had been asking for a left back and Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich, but was given neither. At the same time the club tried to offload Barton for £4 million to Portsmouth, even though Keegan had fought hard to retain the midfield player after his six-month prison sentence for assault.
A deal to sell Alan Smith to Everton also fell through, while the board tried to sell Michael Owen to any takers, despite Keegan imploring club officials to give the Newcastle captain a new long-term contract. Keegan had also been undermined by the sale of James Milner to Aston Villa last week.
In the circumstances, it is a surprise that Keegan, 57, has lasted this long, particularly given his temperamental history. But at his age and with his faltering record, to quit now would probably be to leave management for good.
In response to reports that Keegan had been sacked, the club said that they “wanted him to continue to play an instrumental role as manager of the club”. Whether he can endure further embarrassment is another matter.

ashley will be a good influence on newcastle. he wont waste money on the likes of luque and boumsong. luck at gutierez, youve already got the signing of the season. id be willing to bet that if ashley is still there in 3 years newcastle will be competing 5,6,7th. which is 1st of the non billionaires
will, grimsby, uk
Ashley? from some clothing chain?
Newcastle would have done better with Laura!
Ian Tinn, Slough, England
unbelievable..... dennis wise go home ...mike ashley go home.... kevin keegan will always be a hero here. what a big mistake. ive had it up to here with the so called board . i will not be at st. james park again. the final straw for me.
jessica, newcastle,
He's such a drama queen!
Bernd Neuenkirchen, Houston, TX, US
If every team in the premiership was 'billionaired' to gain access to European gold three would, eventually, be relegated.
Good luck Kevin, you are better off without the hassle. The only way the mugs outside of the 'elite' are going to have any success is through the Johnson's Paint Trophy.
Fred Hall, Sunderland, UK
Keegan is not trying to get a pay off - he is the only player i've heard of to give his testimonial money BACK TO THE CLUB, he loves newcastle united. and he's not moaning, he's been pretty silent. you'd be annoyed if the board and the useless dennis wise were making all the decisions.
Michael, Northumbria,
I suspect Keegam quit only to reconsider his position and hope the board sack him so he gets a large pay off. The man was a talented player but a joke as a manager for a club who are the biggest joke in footballing mis-management since Leeds went bankrupt.
Chris H, Woking, UK
Football managers are no different to football players.Get yourself a huge and long as possible contract, and then get moved on for the big payoff. Big Sam,Avram Grant, SteveMcClaren,Sven(twice) have all enjoyed vast payouts for failure.Funny thing, people out there feel sorry for them.
Alan Barrett, Fetcham, Surrey, UK
Keegan is a choker and a moaner.. When things get tough, he gets going...He should leave football and give us all a rest from his stupid antics.
hamad Lone, London, England
Let's not beat about the bush Kevin Keegan is and always has been a very poor manager and like the majority of other ex professional footballer managers extremely lucky. British football has always failed to grasp that being a good footballer does not automatically make you a good manager.
john. gilmore, Chantilly, france
Ashley is proven incompetent by selecting Dennis Wise and his cronies. Ashley's chairman cant manage the boardroom and cant communicate with the fans. Ashley must learn quickly that you cant demand success of a team manager while interfering by hiring, transferring and firing players.
T David Pattison, Edinburgh, Scotland
ashley must sell his position on tyneside is untenable. leeds is two hours drive away newcastle thats the only place he be welcome.
A buch of cockney chancers are not welcome. In his position he be lucky to get back what he paid for the club as others will see he can't go on.
paul gilboy, newcastle , tyne & wear
Ashley thinks he can run Newcastle like one of his cheap and nasty high street sportswear shops. Sell up and go back to punting cheap tracksuits Ashley - we don't want you anywhere near our club.
Ged, Newcastle, UK
astle just does not realize that the fans at newcastle will not tolerate these moronic actions. he does not seem to know that he has just gripped a tiger by its tail and and it is going to bite his head off. newcastle fans act in unison and are not a group of 'could not care less' individuals.
watson, taunton, somerset
When it comes down to it, Ashley is trying to run the club like American football-a Gen Mgr who decides on/signs the players and a head coach to get them playing. Frankly there isn't anything wrong with this...in America. oddly in America when the coach is also the GM it fails. Toon 4 life!!!!!
craig oilschlager, appleton wi, usa
Man Utd fan here - what a disgraceful way to treat Keegan and the Newcastle fans - I am losing heart in football, it has sold its soul, and I include Old Trafford in that statement.
I think the likes of Platini and Blatter have a good point, much as though I dont like them.
Redman, B'ham, UK
Too right Chris of Worthing ! Newcastle FC and their "supporters" only get what they deserve.
Table 34 - now..
john, watford, england
Looks like it will be Newcastle, West Brom and one from Hull and Stoke to go down then.
Terry Hamblin, Bournemouth,
Mike Ashley has made millions! Just shows you don't have to be intelligent or wise to do that. His Newcastle adventure has been a farrago of nonsense from beginning to end! Another `smart' man who thought he could `transform' the football business. Oh Yeah!
Ian Brown, Stony Stratford, England
He should not have taken the job - never go back, they say, especially where you`ve walked out before.
Sadly the club continues to be a laughing stock, and has dragged Keegan down with it - current events are simply farcical - and why wasn`t Ashley arrested for downing that pint in a pubic place ?
Brian Thompson, Sutton Coldfield, England
what a mess at Newcastle, basically Keegan is a puppet manager and the cronies at the top pulling the strings. i feel for the Newcastle fans, give power back to the Managaer and resign Chairman!
diane slater, llangollen, wales
I agree with you Emlyn. No matter what your opinion of Keegan as a manager he is being forced out by the rediculous transfer arrangemnets at SJP. I wouldn't trust Wise to find his way home never mind world class players !
Kev Tatum, Jarrow, UK
Odd, usually the comments spot is filled with geordies blaming the press. Surely this is the press's fault, too, isn't it? I mean, it was their fault Allardyce was employed, their fault he was sacked and everything since. Wasn't it? Or have I been lied to?
Chris, Worthing, England
The Geordie fans deserve better than MIke Ashley and his approach to 'ownership' of a football club.
Let's hope for their sakes that this beer swilling wannabee leaves and a major investor comes in who will be content to find people to run the club with integrity and wisdom on a long term basis
Cayman Beachbum, Cumbria, UK
I can't wait to see the advert for the new manager's position.
Go ahead football club with exceptional people management skills..................
David, Dubai, UAE
I hate to say I told you so but if you check last weeks comments I predicted this outcome. Yet another kick in the teeth for Geordie fans everywhere. Tell me of another manager that would have his hands tied as tightly as Keegan has and still remain in the job. Wise for manager? Let's hope not.
Paul, Port Douglas, Australia
The most predictable story in football, bottler Keegan!
kenneth Hart, london,
So now's the time for all the anti-Keegan mob to spit their usual vile: a quitter, tactically naive, etc. We've heard it all before and maybe it's true.
But the fact is that no manager in the league would agree to operate with his hands tied in the transfer market.
Ashley out, Arabs in!
john, Taipei ,
It's clear that Keegan has been placed in an untenable situation. The Kevin of old would have resigned with a statement to the fans and the press. It's not happened this time presumably because Keegan needs a job.
Whatever happens the Club is doomed under Ashley and his cohorts.
Emlyn Jones, North Shields, UK
