Portsmouth will take stock today of the implications of their FA Cup Final victory against Cardiff City on Saturday and the Uefa Cup place that goes with it. One of the first results could be that Tony Adams, the assistant manager, who is credited with building the defence that conceded only one goal in the competition, will postpone his search for a club to manage.
“We’ll get this out of the way, sit down and see how it goes,” he said. “Europe, the Uefa Cup is another challenge, and I like a challenge. The Uefa Cup defeat [by Galatasaray on penalties when playing for Arsenal] hurt bad in 2000. That was an awful feeling as a player. I might get a shot at winning it as a coach.”
Players such as Niko Kranjcar, who has been linked with bigger clubs and will be at the European Championship finals with Croatia this summer, are also more likely to stay at Fratton Park. “I would be crazy if I said I would not be tempted by big clubs,” Kranjcar said. “But I am very happy at Portsmouth, especially winning the Cup. It means we will be playing in Europe next season and that is another reason why I am happy here.”
Peter Storrie, the chief executive, will discuss new signings with Harry Redknapp, the manager. Two players on the agenda will be Peter Crouch, the Liverpool and England forward, and John Mensah, the Ghana defender who will be appearing at Fratton Park tonight in a charity match in aid of the Kanu Heart Foundation. “We are going to bring more players in, strengthen the team and get better,” Storrie said. “We had a great season, finishing eighth, but maybe we can go up a couple more places next year.”
Storrie repeated his belief that Redknapp would not retire. “Harry will be here as long as he wants to be and I think that will be a long while,” he said. “He has built this team and he wants to take them to the next level.”
Cardiff have ambitions of competing at a higher level after running Portsmouth close. “Our squad needs five or six players and the gaffer knows that,” Stephen McPhail, the captain, said.
