Glen Johnson, the Portsmouth defender, has signed a new four-and-a-half year contract at Fratton Park. The 24-year-old England international is now committed to the club until the end of the 2012-13 season.
The deal is a boost for manager Tony Adams following the recent losses of Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe to Real Madrid and Tottenham respectively.
Adams said: "It's great news that Glen's decided to sign a new contract. I'm delighted to have him here - I want him here for a long time.
"This is a good place for him. He's got back in the England squad since he came here. Glen's applied himself really well. He's always desperate to play and gets frustrated when he can't.
"He's been very good for this club and this club's been very good for him."
Johnson has got his career back on track at Pompey after an unhappy spell at Chelsea. The right-back impressed after coming through the youth ranks at West Ham United but he failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge following a £6million transfer in 2003.
He initially joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan in 2006 and the move was made permanent for £4million the following year.
Johnson has made 83 first-team appearances for the south coast club and has been a regular in Fabio Capello's England squads.
Since making his England debut in November 2003, he has made 10 appearances - half of them under Capello in 2008 after almost three years out of the team, and had recently been linked with a £10m switch to Liverpool.
Peter Storrie, Portsmouth's executive chairman, added : "In my opinion Glen is the best right-back in the country and this sends out a strong message that top quality players want to play for this club."
