Roy Keane expects to complete the signing of Anton Ferdinand from West Ham United after the defender travelled to Wearside for a medical.
The clubs yesterday agreed a £8 million fee for the 23-year-old central defender, and the Sunderland manager says he is hopeful the deal will be completed later today.
"Anton is up this morning for a medical, we’re looking to tie it up," Keane said. "I will be delighted if I can get him and another one and then we can concentrate on the season."
However, even if Ferdinand completes the deal today, Keane says it may be some weeks before the player makes his debut.
"He’s has a slight hamstring strain so it would be unfair to throw him straight in," Keane said. “There is an international break coming up so it would give him a chance to train with us for two weeks."
Keane has signed Djibril Cissé, El-Hadji Diouf, David Healy, Pascal Chimbonda, Teemu Tainio, Steed Malbranque, David Meyler and Nick Colgan this summer at a cost of about £17million, making him the busiest Premier League manager in the transfer market.

a two bob side? obviously hammers now are goin to hit that slippery slope and this time u wont stay up after being bottom at xmas.
michael, sunderland,
it looks like roy is making sunderland a fashionable destination. who next Kaka?
jonners, weybridge,
AF is a v.talented young player - but he comes with snags. Keane can impose discipline on him for a while, but AF will consider this only as an opportunity to relaunch himself and then move on to a big four side. See how long it takes him to get bored of the blingless nightlife on Wearside...
kwev, ClaretLand, UK
i am surprised if he completes move to sunderland...but alan c is not a very good manager and lacks any enthusiasm and appears a rather dull manager...surprised no other clubs went in there...

After the complete shambles in the Hammers defence on Sunday I'd have thought we should be buying rather than selling. The clock is ticking Mr Curbishley
Guy, London,
I personnally think it's agreat day when a two bob side like Sunderland can nick a player like Ferdinand from a tuppence ha'penny side like West Ham
After all "the acadamy" will be overflowing ....just ask Tony Gale !!!!!!!!
Simon, aberdeen, scotland
It's a one-bob side like West Ham that has to sell it's assets 'cos they can't afford to keep them in the championship
Brian, Stafford, UK
It's a sad day when a two-bob side like Sunderland can nick West Ham's best young players.
