Kieron Dyer has emerged as a summer transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur, although acquiring the Newcastle United midfield player would require a significant shift in the London club’s wage policy.
While the 27-year-old represents the prototype Martin Jol signing he is English, quick and versatile his present earnings far outstrip the maximum outlay at White Hart Lane.
Dyer commands a weekly wage of more than £80,000 at St James’ Park, almost double what Tottenham are understood to pay Robbie Keane, their highest earner.
While the England player may be prepared to lower his demands to revitalise his career away from the North East, where he has endured some difficult times, the difference in earnings may prove prohibitive.
As yet, there is not thought to have been substantive contact between the clubs, while the player, who has now been on Tyneside for eight years, has not expressed any public desire to leave. Indeed, he has previously said he wants to repay the club’s loyalty after a complex range of injuries.
Yet, having failed on numerous occasions to prise Stewart Downing away from Middlesbrough, Jol, the head coach, remains in the market for pace and penetration and Dyer’s ability to fill several roles could prove attractive. At times this season, he has played in wide positions, in central midfield and in attack; it is the latter quality he has scored six goals which may raise further questions concerning the future at Tottenham of Jermain Defoe.
Glenn Roeder has challenged Emre Belozöglu to repeat the solid performance he produced against Chelsea last weekend, with the Turkey midfield player still to show much consistency. “I thought Emre had his best game of the season for us on Sunday,” the manager said. “This followed on from Portsmouth, where I thought his first-half show was his worst 45 minutes for us. He is a very good player and he will be even better if he could be a bit more consistent.”

No offence Downing are you joking get real, Spurs need an astablished left sided player not a the likes of downing. We need someone like joe cole and wayne bridge on our left.
look at berbatov for excample hes an established striker and has done well for us, thats what we need on the left flank both deffencive and attacking, not bit players like downing ect, think big and better, plus english players like downing cost way to much why spend £15 m on him when you could get to foreign players that are better than him for that.
jordan, basingstoke,
I agree with Jeremy from Farnham, although i dont think any amount of money would convince the likes of fabregas to move to spurs.
It is good quality left sided players we need. £15m for Downing. He would be the perfect addition for Spurs, and I think that Middlesbrough would find that very hard to turn down. This would allow Lennon to play his natural game in the right.
We also need a proven left back. I think our first choice targets should be either Matt Taylor or Leighton Baines. £5m would get either of them to the Lane, though I must admit I'd rather have Taylor over Baines.
Just imagine a Spurs team containing Robinson, Dawson, King, Taylor, Downing, Jenas, Huddlestone, Lennon and Defoe!!
James, B'ham, West Mids
A big earning underachiever at the Lane?
Doesn't Jenas already fit this remit?
If the board are serious about taking us to the next level then aim high.
Go to united and break the bank for Ronaldo, go up the road & offer a king's ransom for Fabregas.
If they don't think we are serious, then test their mettle, up the ante.
Don't want to know about someone like Dyer-we need a winning mentality, unless we WANT to remain also rans.
Come on Spurs - how much do we want it?
Jeremy, Farnham,
I'd rather see Spurs getting Sidwell, even though he's a former gooner, he's a quality player!
Harold, Florida,
Martin, I'd rather you invest in a 'younger Dyer' - Giles Barnes, of Derby. Similar sort of player, except he wouldn't command £90k a week and you'd probably get more than 10 games out of him a season.
Simeon, London, UK
Take him PLEASE!!! He is a complete waste of space, he has lost most of his pace and has no power or presence on the pitch at all.
Jon, you are right about him being overhyped, I've watched him over the years get gradually worse.
Helen, Newcastle,
Dyer earns much more than his contributions at Newcastle merit, and he is no better than most of Spurs' existing attacking players, so why bother with him? Spurs' priority has to be defenders, not to mention the fabled ball-holding midfielder.
Austin, London,
Save your money Martin. Keiran Dyer is one of the most overhyped players in the Premiership, who will no doubt get another injury within months of arriving. If you want players with commitment just look at the Reading squad - all within your wage structure.
