Tottenham Hotspur were on the verge of agreeing a deal with Charlton Athletic to sign Darren Bent last night. They are believed to have agreed to pay about £13 million rising to a possible £16 million for the England forward. The imminent capture will break Tottenham’s transfer record of £11 million, which they paid to Dynamo Kiev for Sergei Rebrov, the forward, seven years ago, and pose questions about the future of Jermain Defoe.
Bent is believed to be willing to accept a weekly salary of about £48,000, considerably less than the £75,000 he was offered by West Ham United. The 23-year-old turned down a five-year contract at Upton Park last week after West Ham had agreed a fee of £16 million plus Hayden Mullins, the midfield player. Bent is thought to have had concerns about the relationship of some of the West Ham players with Alan Curbishley, the manager who signed him for Charlton two years ago.
Charlton have been keen to conclude a deal for Bent because they need money to fund about seven signings, as they seek to win promotion to the Barclays Premier League at the first attempt. That posed a problem for Liverpool, who are keen on Bent but have four other preferred targets.
Bent has scored 31 goals in 68 league appearances for Charlton after joining from Ipswich Town for £2.5 million and would be expected to improve his strike-rate against the top sides with better players at White Hart Lane.
He scored only once in the eight meetings with the top-four sides in his first season in the Premiership, but he fared better last season and scored two goals in four matches against the same sides.
It is a reflection of the lack of top talent and an inflated transfer market that Bent will cost nearly twice the amount that similar forwards have been sold for in recent season. By comparison, Andrew Johnson scored 11 goals in 32 league appearances last season after he moved to Everton from Crystal Palace last summer for £8.6 million. Peter Crouch scored 17 goals in 64 league games after he moved to Liverpool from Southampton for £7 million two years ago.
Bent’s expected arrival will raise uncertainty over the future of Defoe, Dimitar Berbatov and Mido, three of the four frontline strikers already at White Hart Lane. Tottenham may be forced to accept about £10 million for Defoe because the England forward is unwilling to extend his contract – which has two years left to run. Defoe, who has turned down a move to West Ham this summer, would probably consider a move only to a top-four side. Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea have showed interest, but they have other targets.
There are strong rumours that United will make a fresh attempt to sign Berbatov. At 26, the Bulgaria forward may feel that he needs to make a move to a club with an established Champions League reputation within the next two years.
Tottenham have told Berbatov that he will not be allowed to move this summer, but he is thought to have a gentlemen’s agreement to leave for a large fee at the end of next season, if Tottenham have not qualified for the Champions League.
Tottenham are in talks about selling Mido, the Egypt forward who they have offered to Fulham and Portsmouth, and are close to selling Anthony Gardner, the defender, and Lee Young Pyo, who is wanted by Udinese.
The North London club are also open to offers for Hossam Ghaly, Danny Murphy, Wayne Routledge and Teemu Tainio, the midfield players.

We are in re-build mode and should not be selling talent so soon. Bent is not proven and Defoe has an impeccable track record. If we see Champions League football next season, we must be able to hold our own and not be knocked out during the early stages. That said, we have a good squad
robert mohamed, Manama, Bahrain
There is absolutely no chance of Berbatov leaving this summer, and i have no doubt that the quartet of Berbatov, Keane, Defoe and Bent will make our strike force all but unstoppable next season. With Lennon getting better, Huddlestone developing, Zokora providing the pacy runs that he made during the second half of last season, and a strong defence including an amazing centre pairing of King and Dawson, Bale who will become the best full-back in the prem, Chimbonda who is already amongst the best full-backs in the prem and hopefully Younes Kaboul as defensive cover, there is no doubt that we are odds on for a Champions League place in May, considering as well the dreadfull state of affairs at Arsenal. For this reson Berbatov will not be leaving next season either. Now all that is needed is a quality left sided player (Drenthe) and a goal scoring midfielder (Diego) and we will be well established as the new member of the top four in place of Arsenal.
Nick, Hertford, Herts
i would swap all 5 (tainio , ghaly, rutledge, mido and murphy) for one decent midfield player. in truth we need 2 new good midfielders.
bernie, london,
Would not want to see a situation where Bent came in as a replacment f or Defoe who I think is the better player.
Sundancer, Brittany, France
Considering Mr Jacobs doesn't seem to believe the West Ham Chairman when he says they have a maximum wage of £55k I doubt he will put any stock in the Charlton chairmans statement that they are not in talks with Spurs as Spurs have not met their £17million valuation.
I wonder where Mr Jacobs gets his info from. Surely there cannot hvae been any contact with Spurs and Bent regarding him willing to accept £48k a week. That would break premiership rules.
Eddie Graham, London,
tottenham must get ghaly stay he is a good players and Defoe he is very good why they will sell him
mage, alex,
hope you meant 10 million Scott
me, lhr,
Why all this negativity? Can anyone remember Man Utd having four great strikers in Yorke,Cole, Sheringham and solskjaar? Martain Jol will be doing great if he can get Bent. You can rotate the whole forward line without being weak. Man Utd won a number of trophies with four great strikers who rotate so be positive. Defoe wants to stay and he will link up well with bent so no worries. Jol knows about our defense and he will strengthen. I will put anything down that we will be top 4 next season.
Matt, Maidstone, Kent
Eddie Graham is right. The press make up stories of wages, the club goes to the effort of commenting that no player has been offered more than the ceiling, yet you keep printing the sme stuff. It was the same when the chairman commented that West Han were not pursuing an Everton player, the press carried on saying Johnson had been "linked".
MJ, London,
Bent is not worth $16m, especially if Henry is worth the same but he works the channels better than defoe, so i think Defoe might be on his way out. Either way both are bench warmers for Berbatov and Keane. If we don't find a goal scoring midfielder (like Nolan or Cahill) then we might lose Berba, which is why this season is so important: without him we become worse and if he joins ANY other team they become title contenders. He is pure class and we need to build our team around him. Bresicano or Diego would be ideal for us. We have to retain the ball better & that means improve our midfield and fast.We have potential but this season we have to smash through the champions league door.
Our defence I am more than happy with especailly with the additions or Rocha and Bale.
My real concern is midfield. Jenas is not a top four midfielder, and we lack any creativity. Wingers will help but there's no defence-splitting creator. If we lose Berbatov to injury we will not score goals.
Olly, chelmsford,
Mido will go, and the Spurs heirarchy are trying to persuade Defoe to stay. There are around 30 games for him to participate in.
Financially there is no need to sell Defoe.
All concerned are confident of securing a Champions League place next May.
Berbatov is wearing a Spurs shirt come August and if all goes to plan then he'll be at White Hart Lane for a number of years yet.
Rob, Ipswich, UK
Would be yet another quality young English addition to an immensely talented squad. Mido will leave this summer and Bent would put pressure on the other 3 strikers for a starting place. Competition will do no harm to any of them.
Edward, Lingfield, Surrey
I would rather have Bent than Defoe any day. But we already have a world-class set of forwards. Now look at our central midfield: nothing much world-class about that. Surely this money could be better spent.
Grahame Foreman, Berkeley, USA
I am a Spurs fan but Darren Bent is simply not worth this type of money.
Why are Tottenham waisting their time with a forward whom I am sure will be a flop when in the spotlight each day. I think he is a wasit of money when we already have a decent set of forwards whom all scored a number of goals last year.
Why therefore spend this large sum of money on Bent when there are other more applicable players to purchase ...... maybe some central defenders so we do not leek as many goals as we always score????
Gordon Binns, austin, Texas, USA
Four first class strikers are what Spurs need to compete in a long testing season, the FA cup and Europe. That is why they need both Defoe and Bent. Especially as there will be players out with injuries during the season.
There are more factors to consider when you compare the Berbatov transfer with the oncoming one of Bent. Like if Berbatov had played in the Premiership his asking price would have been a lot higher than sixteen million and it's most likely Tottenham would not have been able to afford him.
If Spurs get Bent I hope they also manage to sign a decent left winger (R Drenthe). Then Martin Jol will have all that he needs in his squad to produce a balanced team with a very good forward line. A midfield with pace, energy, width and the flare of what we expect from Spurs. A strong defence with a very good central pairing that also has excellent fullbacks who are comfortable to overlap.
James, London,
Darren Bent is a natural goalscorer,Defoe is not.
John, London, UK
Its definitely a big gamble and he won't have much immediate impact on the Spurs team but could be a big star for Spurs and England for years to come.
Mark, Newcastle, England,
Yes, Defoe might have scored the odd spectacular goal but we need a consistant poacher and Bent can be that, as well as being good in the air he will be a fine deputy to Berbatov if need be and dont forget he was top goal scorer 2 season ago. I dont think even drogba would have scored many playing for Chalton last year do you? Defoe has had plenty of chances for Tottenham and England and not really taken any, so if he is the player many people said he was why hasnt it shone through in more than 4 years???
Richard Kalwarczyk, Basingstoke, hampshire
Why do the media always tout Berbatov to Man U?
He's staying at spurs, we will get champions league next season and he will become one of the clubs greatest ever players
James, London,
I agree Gregory . I have a lot of time for Mr Jol but I do question some of our recent sighnings .. Mido , Murphy , Routledge and now Bent ( for 16m ? , oh no , no ) . Why change ? Ok , so Defoe may not be "happy" as the "third" striker but it has to be managed . Bent for Defoe and a 6m deficit is not good business.
lostinthesixties, farnham, UK
Personally I feel that the attacking options are ok. However, to continue to improve the defense and midfield is the way to go for me. Key players like Berbatov surely have to stay a while or how are you ever going to build a decent team. I still question the ambition of THFC plc After Carrick's departure one is left thinking that a tidy little profit is all they're interested in.
Mike, Winslow,
But if Defoe wants to leave, we really can't risk him leaving for a nominal fee next season or even for nothing the year after! Personally I think if we can get 10 quid for Defoe then thats great business for us. We would then have Berba, Keane and Bent as our 3 best strikers with Barnard, Pekhart and Dixon introduced into the team when the time is right.
Scott, Limehouse,
I can't believe how many Spurs fans don't rate Darren Bent! I'm a Spurs fan and have wanted him from when he was at Ipswich. Defoe is a great finisher, no argument but have any of you watched how many times our possession is lost due to Defoe not understanding the offside trap? Also Defoe & Keane cannot play together. If Berba is injured we have a limited strikeforce. If Defoe goes for £10m I'll be well happy. Bent can play upfront on his own, has great pace and awareness and is a fantastic finisher. With Keane, all three can play together and Berba & Bent can play upfront alone. We will only need 3 strikers as we have Pekhart & Barnard to try as a 4th striker, Priority now should be Drenthe for the left wing and Wesley Sneijder.
Daniel, Kent, UK
Considering the West ham chairman has stated hiis club havea maximum wage of £55k a week does Mr Jacobs believe he is not telling the truth
Eddie Graham, London,
I feel that Jol will hold onto Keane, Berbatove and Defoe - its Mido that will be making way for WHL. That confirms the balance therefore in the little and large combination. I am sure that the only reason Defoe is stalling on the new contract is solely his ambition to play in the Champions League. Bent is not a guranteed starter, he was not for Charlton and definately will not be for Spurs.
16 Million a high fee for Bent, however his age and Nationality fits into the current Spurs Way.
Adeel, London, UK
If Bent is worth 33% more than Berbatov, this I just have to see! What Spurs really need is a player who can cross the ball from the left of mid-field. Maybe spend the money from the sale of Defoe on someone to fit in here?
Ted, Papamoa Beach, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Defoe will stay.
berbatov will go.
Like for like player,
Mike, Stevenage, herts
I am sure I dont know what Spurs game is. Compared with Defoe, Bent is solely an athlete. Some of the goals Defoe scored last season were truly spectacular. And Jol spent all the time boasting that his three forwards each scored around 20 goals. There is no way Bent can improve on that. My view is Defoe will have to be sold and Spurs will be worse-off as a consequence. Mark my words.
Gregory, London,
