Martin Jol is confident that his Tottenham Hotspur side will begin to flourish now that his players are starting to drift back from injury and added that he was under no pressure to master-mind victory over Arsenal at White Hart Lane tomorrow.
Aside from Ledley King, his captain, Tottenham will be at virtual full strength, with Aaron Lennon back after knee surgery and Darren Bent available after a thigh complaint. Having leading players in the treatment room has contributed to a poor start for Tottenham, with Jol’s problems compounded by the meeting between club officials and Juande Ramos, the Seville coach, which appeared to undermine the 51-year-old manager.
“There’s no pressure,” Jol said. “We want to get back to winning ways, that is our main focus. I would say that for me there are no worries. I’m looking forward to the game.” Jol insisted that the international break had been relaxing enough for him despite having a fortnight to dwell on the last-minute equaliser that his side conceded in the 3-3 draw with Fulham.
This was the season that Tottenham were meant to challenge Arsenal for a place in the Champions League, but they have one win from five games while their rivals are unbeaten and level on points with Liverpool at the top of the Barclays Premier League. “At the end of the season we will see,” Jol said. “We want to make the supporters happy and for them it’s a big game as well.”
Michael Dawson is ready to play against Arsenal, meaning the only high-profile absentee will be King, who has undergone knee surgery, although Jol believes that Younès Kaboul, the France Under21 player and summer signing, will provide adequate cover in the heart of defence. “We were a bit unfortunate with injuries in the last year,” Jol added. “My best player, Ledley King, was out for seven or eight months. We have got Kaboul, he is young but he has all the potential to be like Ledley King.”
King is on a week-by-week schedule and the club’s medical staff are reluctant to set a specific comeback date.
Jol could start with Lennon or bring him off the bench as Tottenham look for their first win over Arsenal since 1999.
