Martin Jol has been given five matches to save his job as manager of Tottenham Hotspur. Pressure on the Dutchman has intensified after Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by Arsenal, but the Tottenham board has resolved to give him time and will review his position during the international break next month.
With some board members briefing against Jol, his dismissal appears inevitable, although he has been given an opportunity to turn things around as a result of the club’s failure to line up a successor. Juande Ramos is their first choice, but after last month’s abortive approach to the Spaniard in a Seville hotel, securing his services is proving to be complicated.
Tottenham sources have indicated their belief that Ramos wants to move to White Hart Lane and he has yet to sign a new contract at Seville after entering the final year of his present deal at the club.
Ramos has the chance to enhance his reputation further when his attractive Seville side meet Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League on Wednesday, although Jol is taking some solace from the continued backing of the Tottenham fans.
“I don’t think the board is a problem,” Jol said. “I feel there are two worlds here in London. There are the guys with opinions and then there are the supporters. Although they read the papers, they are still backing me and that’s a great feeling.”
Jol confirmed that he expects to speak to Daniel Levy this week, with the chairman likely to demand answers after spending £40 million during the summer on players who have delivered only one win from six Barclays Premier League matches. Jol will point out that his team endured a similarly difficult start last season before recovering to finish fifth and he says he retains the support of the players.
“I speak to the board all the time,” Jol said. “We speak about players and talk about the team during the week. I will tell them what I felt what was going wrong and what we did well. I think the players still respond to me. Otherwise you can’t have 65 points with a young team. We had similar points this time last year, not more, not less.”
Paul Robinson came out in support of his beleaguered manager, although only the players’ deeds can save him. “The players are fully behind the manager,” the England goalkeeper said. “One result doesn’t make him a bad manager. We are hopeful that the manager will be staying and we will dig the results out for the manager in the next few weeks. We’re going to get the results for the manager.”

Paul Robinson is the one who likes to do the talking, but is also the one who lets in all the goals which doom Spurs consistently, as did the American before him. Until they can get someone like Ditchburn and Ramsey at the back,it will be back to lower league football. After all Spurs do have a long history of inconsistency and therefore which they will find difficult and probably impossible to get rid of, simply because that is their tradition, and as Jol himself intimated, what he meant by their 'philosophy' . After all it's only a game so why worry ?

Results over the next few weeks may reveal a recovery in fortunes to some degree but the real test is the ability to beat the top four clubs and those clubs also vieing for fifth spot. Spurs were close to Arsenal in terms of effort but the skill and application of the Spurs players was not of the required standard. If you consider Arsenal to be some way behind Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, then despite the vagarieties of football you must realize that Spurs are also short of the necessary skill and technical levels to beat those top teams. That realization means that fifth place is the best that the current manager and team combination can achieve. Europeam Championship football is not attainable under Jol and the Spurs Board are unable to find a technically gifted manager of a clear calibre above Jol to replace him. The absolute reality of the situation is this: the Board know Jol cannot deliver fourth place and they are now buying time to find someone who can.

Unfortunately he is tatically useless and anyone who knows about football will tell you that you have to have a good defense to win anything and they have not replaced carrick as the playmaker.I do not know where he gets the fans support from as most of my friends who support the team would like him replaced with Mark Hughes the favourite

There is a certain irony in Paul Robinson championing the cause for Martin Jol because without a doubt this season and last he was the main cause of Spurs leaking goals. It seems that Jol has some form of Robinson blindness he seems incapable of seeing just how inept his goalkeeper is. Somehow he can`t see the missed crosses, the poor positioning, the punt up field, when a throw or short pass is the best option. Please for your own sake Martin wake up, smell the coffee and put Cerny between the sticks, believe me the change will be unbelievable and you will lead Srurs up the League.....if you don`t then I wish you all the best at your next club, which hopefully will have a goalkeeper called something other than Robinson
