Paul Robinson, the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, insists his long-term future is at White Hart Lane after earning a recall to the first team and playing in the side that lifted the Carling Cup.
The 28-year-old was dropped in favour of Radek Cerny for the semi-final against Arsenal after a series of high-profile blunders and remained on the sidelines for ten matches only to be recalled in the week leading up to the Wembley showpiece final against Chelsea after Cerny himself committed a basic error which cost his side a goal.
Robinson may have been wrong-footed for Didier Drogba’s first-half goal which gave Chelsea the lead, but he then kept Spurs in the hunt with a string of saves and played a key role in helping the club end their nine-year trophy drought.
Juande Ramos, the head coach, has shown he has no favourites by dropping Robinson, and Spurs have also been linked with goalkeepers – but the former Leeds United goalkeeper is adamant he is not looking for a transfer.
“I’ve got four years left on my contract, I’m absolutely delighted to be here,” he said. “I’ve never ever said anything other than that.”
Robinson suggested his performance was inspired by his son Jack, who has been ill. “My little boy has been poorly, he’s four weeks old and has had bronchiolitis,” he added. “He’s been in hospital so it’s been a tough week for me off the field but on the field it’s put things in perspective and helped my performances.”
Ramos has already shown he has a ruthless side – youngster Jamie O’Hara was in tears after he was left out of the cup final squad – and Robinson is well aware further mistakes will see him lose his place again.
“The manager doesn’t see the goalkeeper as a different position, he sees you as part of his team,” he said. “If a striker is not scoring goals he’ll take him out, if the goalkeeper is not doing his job he’ll take him out. That’s the way it’s been.
“It was difficult for me to accept at first but that is the way it is and I’m delighted to get a winners’ medal.
“I don’t think after one bad game you get taken out - after a poor run of form the manager is entitled to do what he wants to do.
“I’m not going to lie and say it’s been an easy season for me. People know it’s been a rough time for me but to go through the bad times makes me appreciate this even more.”

Lets give compassion and support to Gazza. I agree with Martin Samuel that we need to act during his lifetime and not after. He deserves a future with people, not without.
Some ideas around rehabilitation and then channeling his talents back into football, could provide the catalyst for a brighter future. He needs and deserves to be valued.
The FA and Premiership need to act now in his and their interests.
